Vegas mp3 generator problem

I mixed a song in Vegas with a stereo keyboard track and a mono vocal track. When I mixed it down and rendered it to a wav file, it came out sounding great. But when I rendered to mp3, the vocals sounded muddy and muffled.

I took the wav file and converted it to mp3 in GoldWave (an editor like Sound Forge, but much cheaper), and it sounded great. Any ideas why the mp3 generator in Vegas would do this?
 
When you convert (compress) the WAV. file into an MP3 file make sure that you dither it at the hightest setting (I think that it is 128kbps to 320kbps, but I'm not sure :rolleyes:......)
