Questions about balanced, unbalanced, and spdif. - And my computer
I've actually got a few things I need some help with.
First is my preamp.
I just bought a Focusrite TwinTrak Pro to upgrade my pres.
I set it up and I'm also using it to feed my headphone amp and my monitors.
The outputs on the pre come as +4 XLR and -10 TS.
Since I'm using a delta 44 sound card, my DAW inputs are TRS.. I'm forced to set the delta inputs at -10. Although everything works ok, I have to JACK the volume on everything in order to get a reasonable volume.. It doesn't seem right. I'm powering 2 NT5's and I have to have the gain almost all the way up in order to get a strong signal into the DAW.... The only noticible difference I've heard between +4 and -10 is volume... Is there a way to get the balanced XLR output of my preamp into the balanced TRS input of my delta?
Also.
Would switching to spdif be a more reasonable solution?
I've never heard the difference between analog and spdif back to back.
In order to go the spdif route, I'd have to buy an additional card for the twintrak that runs at about $250. I'd also have to upgrade my soundcard to at least a delta 6/6. Approximating at $400.. Would that be an intelligent way to proceed?
If theres 2 channels, and only one spdif out... is the signal split into left and right by the soundcard, or can only one channel use the spdif out at a time?
One more thing.
Adobe Audition 2.0 runs like ass.
Real time effects click and pop. Sometimes the transport controls work, and other times they are greyed out and have to be restarted. All in all, the product is total crap. I'm running on a 1.8 GHz machine with 768 megs of ram. Seperate drives holding my temp directories, and a seperate system drive. I'm running WinXP pro service pack 2. I've do have some other applications on the machine. Apache runs as a service, along with mysql and php. They don't consume much for resources as they aren't used. They're on there in case anything happens to my webserver and I have to fall back on something. I've also got Itunes on the machine, but not running, and I've uninstalled A/V software. All of my other computer stuff is done on a linux machine. Any tips that could make it run better? I tried to return it, but its such a pain to contact, fillout, and fax the forms that I decided for $129.00 I'll just keep it and try and work with it.
Thanks.
