Hi folks.
this thing just seems to be awesome in every way.
all those sounds,,guitars etc,,,great.
has anyone tried or owned one? i will be gigging inthe USA soon, and i was planning on buyng a guitar to collect when i get over there to avoid all the hassles at security etc. the Line6 Variax is just reduced in price worldwide.
its doen to£499 in the UK,,and $679 in the USA.
So it would be a fair bit cheaper for me to do it this way
if i do get one. I will try one out soon i hope.
Who will start me of with an opinion or 2?
cheers in advance!

Try it out first. I've heard that the neck is kinda thick and has a satin finish.

To me, modeling is a cute concept and can be handy for those who change their guitar often during a performance for different sounds.

But you won't be able to pick up any Hungarian radio stations with the Variax, ie no magnetic pickups.

However I can guarantee that you will be satisfied with the guitars at this link: http://carvin.com/

I tried out a Variax, one of the standard versions not the newest. I was not impressed with the quality of construction, though that is supposed to be cured on the more expensive models.

It was obvious that they spent all their development time on the electronics without much thought to playability. The finish on the neck seemed "sticky" so that if you played it for any length of time it would be a problem.

I didn't like any of the "acoustic guitar" models, but some of the electrics sounded OK. Also, it sounded better through a solid state than a tube amp, which I expected.

I did not find anything about it that would make me want to give up my PRS or Strat.

Second hand rumors

Any review I have read said that it plays like a cheap guitar with expensive electronics.

I never saw it but a friend had one and he returned because the acoustics didn’t sound all that great. It’s all going to be perspective as his normal guitar is a PRS electric and a Martin acoustic. I don’t think that stepping down from the real thing is ever going to make anyone happy. If you play a fender bullet and a $50 acoustic it will probably play and sound fine to you. Most definitely try it first.

i dont think they are that great, i have had to play a ton of them at work. and they really do feel like a toy, crappy build quility, with overly expensive electronics that give you very little manipulation.

if you want to go that route. go with one of the roland synth systems. if you can imagine it, and have the time to dink with it, you can pretty much do it with the nice ones.

A friend of mine has the new Variax plugged into a Vetta II and what an awesome combination that is. The new Variax is far better than the original and plugging into the Vetta II is just icing on the cake. .

hi folks
thanks a lot for all the replies.
i guess i will just have to play one and decide for myself anyway.
i appreciate the comments!i had been thinking about it for using live, cos when i gig abroad i can only take one guitar with me.
if the acoustic sounds and a few others where half decent it would be good for me i think,
cheers
