for me, it's always been about eddie's playing.

just listening to this guy, you get a feeling that he's a happy player.

he's just got this incredible attitude that comes out in his playing, and it's the attitude that is mostly missing from almost everything i've heard in recent years, save a few that are outside the umbrella of popular music....

lots of bad attitude out there right now...

If you're still planning on buying them, then they're not charging too much!:)

The only way you can make your voice truly heard is to refuse to buy them. Vote with you dollar! Boycott Van Halen!

Lead the charge, lesterpaul!

$57.50 is $57 too much for VH tickets... Maybe back in 87 when they were at their peak. The only part of that show that would remotely interest me is Haggar and I would rather see him alone at the Cabo Wabo in Mexico....

I was in 8th grade and just learning to play electric guitar, mostly inspired by Ace Frehley, when VH1 came out. This was one kid who was probably the best player in school, and he was carrying around a cassette recorder and playing VH1 for select groups of people. Obviously he knew the disco freaks couldn't handle it.

We're hanging around in the classroom before social studies and he said "you gotts here this", pushed play, and there it was - Runnin With The Devil, Eruption, and You Really Got Me. Rock-n-roll had just got a major much needed shot in the arm!

We were amazed - the tone, the distortion, the speed, and what the heck was his technique. We hadn't even heard of tapping at that point. So Eruption was like "how in the hell..."

I know good rock-n-roll when I hear it cuz it grabs me by the booboo and makes me want to pick up my guitar and play. Van Halen still makes me want to grab my guitar and play.

But I'm sorry, I wouldn't give my left nut or $87.50 to see them in concert - that's just too much. Thanks for the posts Aron.

i was just finished high school and heard 'aint talkin bout love' coming out of a neighbors bedroom window. it was a moment that i'll never forget. i followed those guys religiously through their david lee roth era, and each show i saw was very unique. you never knew what to expect from david lee roth, he was 'the show'. sammy was so mainstream and average that there was no way he could fill those shoes. i saw them once with sammy, i honestly enjoyed watching steve stevens playing with vince neil more than van halen on that night.

30 bucks is too much for anything less than david lee roth w/ van halen.

plus, i'd be kinda fun to see if they could do a show without punching each other out.

Hey I was at that show too, at the Hardees Pavilion right?

3 days later I went back there to lalapalooza - Primus, Alice & Chains, Rage Against the Machine

Ahhh....nostalgia......

I was 11 in '78 and I remember sneaking in to my older brother's room to listen to VH's first album on his turntable (while he was probably out smoking spleefs with his friends....) There's no doubt that album had a huge impact. To me, the pinnacle of Van Halen was the Fair Warning LP. It all went downhill from there. It's pretty obvious that Fair Warning was where Eddie wanted to be and Dave was slowly but surely coming under the delusion that he was Cab Calloway or something. I saw the Diver Down tour and the first tour with Sammy. Both were good shows but the first was the real deal. It was just corny to hear VH covering Sammy's stuff. While I can appreciate Eddie, I think at the time of VH 1 in 78, I was much more influenced by Aerosmith's "Rocks" album and Zeppelin's "Physical Graffiti" and "Presence" albums.

Yeah, Fair Warning did definitely have something angry going on under the hood. Ed's tone is just unreal and he plays his guitar like he's about ready to throw it into moving traffic. I think it's also the first album they did without any covers. Diver Down was chock full 'o' covers, but you have to admit it did have some pretty brilliant moments on it... Cathedral, Little Guitars, and Hang 'Em High.
1984 for me was Van Halen getting their second wind. It was really a pivotal point for the band: Ed was finally stretching out and going in new directions and Roth was at his Vegas best. Unfortunately, they began tripping over their collective egos at that point and the circus just fell apart.

To sum up... I'd rank their early albums in this order:

VH1
Fair Warning
1984
Diver Down
VHII
WACF

I might put VHII above Diver Down. Women in Love has to be one of my favorites. That and Dance the Night away, Spanish Fly, Beautiful Girls.....

There's just so many good tunes that they had. Too bad they don't play them all. Either way, I'll go see them because they were such an important part of my teens. A day without Van Halen back then was like a day without smoking a dube...

At least they won't be playing any of the Van Halen III songs with Gary Cherone. :D

Another cool thing about old VH is that they weren't afraid to do something completely out of their idiom. Songs like Big Bad Bill, Could THis be Love?, Happy Trails, etc. Those songs really set them apart from all the poser bands.

By the way... I could swear there is a woman singing backups on Could This Be Love. Anyone know who it is? Or is it just Micheal singing with his hoo-has in a vice?

Do you mean Why can't this be Love or Ain't talkin bout love or So this is Love ?

ooops... my bad.

I mean "Could This be Magic?" off the WACF album. The words "could this be love" are also in the chorus, but obviously are not the title.

I am ashamed.
