Valve Junior Tubes

I think a bunch have recently purchased these little giants.

I'm just wondering if any have replaced their tubes yet. If so what manufacture did you go with and how did it effect your sound?

Also where did you purchase them?

I found one site that sells a complete kit to upgrade the VJ but you could buy a couple of VJ's for the price of the kit.

I'm thinking if there is not at least a 20% improvement it sound why bother.
 
I haven't played the valve junior but I'd assume it's no different then your other ordinary tube amp.
 
I ordered mine (JJ's) from www.eurotubes.com

The stock tubes were ok, IIRC. I think the JJ's are a bit brighter with a little more crunch. I didn't do any serious A/B comparisons, though.
 
I find JJ's to be quite dark in this amp. Both of my Valve Jrs. have NOS Sylvania EL84's and One has a Brimar 12AX7 and the other has a GT12AX7-M.

so which one do you prefer, you must have a favorite. Did you lose a little of the harshness over the generic tubes? Did you buy your tube local or online?

I put the stock Sovteks back in last night just to compare a little more. IMO, the differences b/w the JJ's and Sovteks are subtle on my setup (running into a single crate 12" speaker @ 8ohms). I actually think the distortion from the Sovteks sounds better to my ears (tighter), but the JJ's offer a slightly better attack (rounder/punchier/other meaningless adjectives), especially on cleaner settings. I thought the JJ's broke up a little earlier, while the Sovteks allowed a tad more clean gain before distortion. YMMV. ;)

My combo has been modded and my head is stock so it isn't apples to apples.
