what do you guys think?

im replacing my current ldc because it just doesnt fit well in the mix for vocals, its just another crappy nady chinese-built one. but, i have grown to like it for acoustic, harmonica, and some voices. others will just sound too harsh. im in high school with no job other than recording demos for kids at my high school for next to nothing so my budget is in that $100-$150 range.

so what do you guys think? im leaning towards the v67 cause ive heard it is a bit darker than the b1, and thats what im looking for, but a friend of mine who is now working in a studio in nashville started out with a b1 and raved about it as a good, solid mic for starters.

and i wont need this mic for much else other than vocals, ive got my acoustic setup up to par for me right now.

thanks in advance for putting up with my "newbie-like" post

I tried the two, and I like the V67 better for VOX. I like the B1 better for Acoustic Guitar and othe instruments.

I have both, Love em.
If I had to choose one I`d go with the Sp b1, for its multiple uses :)

what about the new v67i that SRR just mentioned under me? it has two capsules to choose warm (im guessing like the v67) or bright (maybe something more useful on acoustic guitar as well) and its only $50 more... i may have to do some research.

That's hard to say

because every voice is different. I'm sure most would say the 67 if it's pretty much for vocals only. On my voice, I think it sucks, but then my whole chain sucks, so it might not be the mic. I don't have/have never used the B-1, but i think it's supposed to be a little more neutral, which could be good or bad, depending on the source. So the 67 might be better for you, but the guy down the street that you're recording, it might be the other way around.

You might also want to consider the MXL 990. I haven't tried one, but they're getting good buzz, some of it from people who ought to know, and it's cheaper than dirt.

Just out of curiousity, what's the rest of your signal chain?

for vocals
nady scm900
either bluetube mic pre or audio buddy depending on voice
behringer fca202 (i know, i know)
imac with logic express 7

i dont have a great chain, but i also dont have a job, and im sixteen.

i was leaning more towards the v67 because ive heard it was a darker mic, so if i had someone that just did not fit with the mic, i could use the nady, which to me, and from what ive heard, is a little bright.

if you don't have any dynamic mics

you might want to try a 57, or even one of the cheaper versions/imitations. It might not be what you're looking for either, but it would definitely be different. Since 57s are pretty common, you might be able to find somebody who already has one that will let you borrow it to try it out. Now I can't vouch for how well it will work with either one of thos pres, but if it's free, it can't hurt to try.

And don't be embarrassed by your equipment (I know, that's easier said than done, I'm guilty of it myself). Just think of it as no place to go but up. Things can only get better.

Oh yeah, and let's see what Harvey and Warhead have to say about the 67i.

Be cool.

for dynamics ive got a peavy pvm 325 snare drum mic which is acting as my 57 now, and performing well. i also just picked up the blue kickball and ive been very pleased with it on kick and guitar amps. ive also got an old adm small condenser, shure bg 5.1, and some other samson dynamics that i dont use too often. and that nady scm900. im not worried about my dynamic situation, im satisfied with what ive been getting out of those. im primarily concerned with vocals. now im not sure if i should go for another large condenser, people have been raving about those nady ribbons. my question about those is if it is figure 8, will it pick up much more noticable room noise than a cardiod if my recording area isnt the best? also thank you to everyone who is helping me out you guys are great

I was just pointing out that you don't have to use a condensor for vocals.

Yeah, a figure 8 will pick up more room noise unless you can successfully isolate the other side, and then I don't know if that does something funky to the response.

I hope someone else can jump in here and help.
