I walk the line
Has anyone tried using a V67 on acoustic in combination with one or more ECM8000's. I thought I remembered Harvey describing this once, but I could be mistaken. I though I saw a picture of the over-the-shoulder method being used the right side with an 8000, another 8000 at about the nut, aimed at the 12th fret, and a V67 way out in front of the sound hole. Am I dreaming?

I haven't done the 67 in combo with an over the shoulder ECM8000, but I did do that with a 603/ECM combo with excellent results!

In comparing a single 67 to the 603, positioned at the 12th fret 6" away and pointing toward the sound hole, I preferred the 603. It sounded fuller and richer with all the clarity you could want. Really nice.

Since you have both..

How would you describe the difference on acoustic between your 8000 and 603?

and thanks for the response.

I like the ECM in combo with my SE5000 tube LD. I like the ECM at the 12th fret, it is very boomy in general and that was the best placement for it in my situation. It also gives you a hot signal to minimize room sound if that is a concern.

well, I've done a spaced omni pair with the 8000's and the nut/hole/6" method ;) (is that a good way to describe it?) with the 603, so the technique does not match.

But I would say the 8000's sounded exactly like you would expect. Very flat, very realistic. No extra anything, nothing missing. Lots of room sound obviously.

The 603 on the other hand gives a lot more of a musical tone. Technically, it's not as accurate, but it is exceptionally pleasing. It's warm without being wooly, and clear without being bright. Lots of detail too.

How far off of the 12 fret do you place the mic? Are we talking inches, co-planer or above or below?

Thanks,
Pete

The 8000's don't exactly give you much in the way of a stereo image. Just a lot more room sound and, and unfortunately, phase problems.

If your room has great accoustics, then the 8000s can be incredible. I have done a setup where I close miced with an mc012, and stuck one of the Behringers back a few feet and it sounded sweet. That was in my big living room, though, with the hardwood floors and 15-foot ceilings.

For my normal setup, though, mics like the 603 and the Octava mc012 just seem to flatter the guitar, work better in stereo pairs, and give me less phase troubles.
