Using the M ONE XL as a compressor

I have an M ONE XL, and I am trying to use it to learn about compression. I have the M ONE in the effects loop of my mixer. I can only turn the aux return to about 1 before the mixer starts peaking, but the M ONE is only getting something like -20dB.

What am I doing wrong here? I have tried various ways of getting the levels up in the M ONE to no avail. My Motif only goes up so loud, and it isn't enough to get the input levels up, even with the M ONE input knob all the way up.

Not to mention, is this really going to be a decent way to compress some stuff, or do I really need to have something like a RNC? I would rather not spend money if it's not necessary. Go easy on me, I am a newbie.
 
What is a RNC? As we are talking about compressors, can I get one good compressor for everything... drums leads piano guitar whatever. I would like something that costs less that 2000 dollars but it is ok if it is more that 500
 
RNC = REAL NICE COMPRESSOR

is made by FMR Audio, they sell for right around 200 dollars and are considered a heavyweight in the sub 1000 dollar range. Ive never used one but alot of people on here will recommend them.
 
so this thing is really that good? its funny these small box's like the joe meek and this FMR seem like a joke but I guess they count where it matters.
 
So, am I at least right in thinking that the input levels in the M ONE should be a lot closer to 0 for me to be getting the desired results?
 
If you are learning about compression from a M ONE XL you will be learning a long time. That is a digital delay device.

Are you talking about the M-One XL from t.c. electronic? As far as I know, there is no compressor in that device.
 
Just whut i was gonna say...got one in the rack and not one compressor noise in it....also sounds like you got the input set to the -10 instead of the +4....or versa vicea.and as far as inexpensive compressors for the buck...RNC...
 
OK, I take it back. There is a compressor setting in the M-One XL. But there is no attack control. So, it is fixed attack and there is no way of knowing if its fast enough for what you are running through it. If you really want to learn compression you have to go with something that varies the attack.

I did a comparison with an RNC and the M-One sounds OK but, things get kind of fuzzy on the low end. Its usable though. Compared to the RNC? Well, the RNC sounds clear even when its compressing hard so, this is a couple of notches below that sound.
 
Use the M-One for it's reverbs and delay/chorus FX etc... get yourself a RNC for compression.

OK, thanks everyone. I think I will try looking to see if it's set at -10, but I will go ahead and pick up a RNC. I guess $200 isn't going to kill me.
