Steal Sessions

1 1/2 weeks ago we dragged my drumkit, my computer, a bunch of cables and a loaned mixer to the rehearsal studio to do a 8 hour recording session of my drumming for a total of 13 songs of my band. It took me 3 hours to set up everything and have it working as good as possible. We used a bunch of microphones that we could use from the rehearsal studio (he's also renting PA systems and such) and a Behringer FX2222 for the necesarry mic amps for my Delta 1010LT. We managed to record 13 songs in total, drums only. Since this was a first-timer there were quite a few issues I didn't control properly then so some editing is needed. But I think I'm going too far somehow. I read that famous topic by Sonusman, especially (for now) the section:

"I cannot believe that viewing a recorded kick drum on a DAW doesn't show the one kick in the middle of the song that is like 12db louder then the rest! Then when you mix, you have the whole damn mix at like -20db average because if you turn it all up, that one kick drums peaks out. USE YOUR DAMN EDITOR AND CUT AND PASTE ANOTHER KICK DRUM HIT THERE!!! OR AT LEAST HIGHLIGHT THE HIT AND TURN IT DOWN!!! I AM SHOUTING BECAUSE THIS IS HOW MUCH LOUDER YOUR MIXES WILL GET WHEN YOU DO LITTLE STUFF LIKE THAT!!!"

Now I realize that I'm far off being the drummer I'd like to be.... I noticed that I created not only one kick being 12db louder that the rest, but many, many kick and snare hits seem much (12db+) louder than the average. Therfore I started editing.. -3db for non destorted kicks/snares and replacing the kick in total when it was so loud that distortion can be seen in the wav editor. Also I muted and used fades in- and out for the 2 tom-tracks, enabling sound only when the toms are actually hit (the floortom introduced a 'roar' everytime I used the kick). I gave myself 3 weeks before the rest of the tracks (guitar, bass & vox) will be recorded, but now it seems that this is even quite short, since I'm not even half way editing. Am I over-doing it, or is this the best way to go?

All comments will be highly appriciated.

As soon as all editing is done and the rest is recorded I'll post one or two songs in the mp3 thread, to see how I'm doing there.. I'm a total newbie on this issue, but also really enthousiastic to learn to do it properly and this forum is helping a LOT! Thanks people...
