Using mic preamps on mixers

might be the wrong forum........ My yamaha mixer has 4 preamps on it, which i find pretty decent. Is it possible to connect my mics into each preamp on the mixer and then connect each channel seperately to the four inputs on my Presonus firebox interface?? it only has 2 preamps and not the greatest :confused:
 
If its an mg series, you can use the effects loop to do exactly that. If you want to monitor through the main outs on the mixer, only plug them the back of the mixer halfway. If it doesnt matter, just plug them in all the way.
 
thanks for the info..........yeah, its the mg8fx. Each channel has a I/O iack besides the XLR or line jack. So I would just run a 1/4 cable from the I/O jack to the inputs on my inerface, with my mics connected to the XLR on each channel of my mixer?I would be monitoring through the outs of my interface. I just wanna use the mixer for the preamps, so my mics will have extra pick up
 
I used to use the insert points on my Peavey to run its pres with a MOTU 828. Worked well.
 
i wouldnt use the inputs on my mixer that say "send" and "return", right? i would use the inputs on the channel strip that say "Insert I/O"?
 
You can, but don't use the main outs into the Firbox at the same time. The inserts and the mains (as well as the group outs if it has them) are reverse-phased with each other on the MG mixers for some reason.
 
you gotta da stereo output on she? Pan one pre to da left and de otha to de right? Bingo man!

which can be cured by reversing a couple of wires.

That's a longer signal path which in a cheap mixer would arguably cause a little bit of degradation along the way. Direct outs or out of the inserts would be best.

yep dis is being true but me is guessing extremely such small mixer has none of these things, eh? Inserts would probably be being unbalanced though, no? Perhaps dis is being better though than a so cheap extra amplifier though no because the extra "length" of the signal path will be causeing no problems no? Most likely though the thing is being so sucky it really doesn't matter anyway, no?

Which begs the question, why would Yamaha set it up that way?
