I am a guitarist and am doing some recording with the digi001 and protools. I am using fruity loops to get drums into my recordings. What advice does anyone suggest for getting my drums to sound more like drums and not like techno beats, for instance adding puggins like reverb, noisegate, etc.

which version of FL do you have??

if its 3, good luck...

if its 4, you gotta find the right sounds and then mess with the individual hits (of lets say, the hats.) change the velocities (volume) of some of the hits... by just clicking the boxes alone -- and leaving it like that, they will all be exactly equal in volume -- therefore making it very obvious that theyre not real. mess around with the panning of the hats, as well as all cymbals and toms -- just like you would if they were real drums.

if its 5,open up a new project, then go to "packs" then "FPC." switch out the drums on the new project with the ones you like from "FPC." the drums in FPC are actually real live samples, not electronic techno crap (no offense to anyone -- its just frustrating as F when youre trying to do a rock song on top of straight up techno sounds.) and then use the same panning/volume advice i mentioned for 4.

not familiar with 6, but i imagine its pretty much identical to 5

if you need any more help, feel free to ask away

This is the best sample set I've found.

http://www.naturalstudio.co.uk/ns_kit7freedownload.html

It has different volume sounds (each different hits, not just the same sample turned down). I've found that if you mix it up a bit in FL, and keep the drums separate (as far as only having high-hats on 1 line, snare on another), you can make some pretty damn good beats.

Check out my soundclick page. The beats there were all done with Fruityloops and those samples. I just got a bit more creative than most i think. I usually spend about 2 hours getting the drums right.

I try and Stuck with MTV are good examples.

Heres one of my newest song ideas im working on... all of which i use FL for the drum tracks.

this particular one contains sounds from the FPC pack i was talking about.

pretty damn real sounding if you ask me.... they definitely have better quality than the shit i recorded, thats for sure... you just gotta find the right sounds and mess around with the settings, thats really all i can say

What are some of the cymbals and hihats use use in your main rythum. I'm new to drums and I don't even know thw differencw between a Tom or a Snear either. What's a good combo to use for a basic rythum like the one in your first song?

Of Course the worst one... 3

Thanks though I'll check out turning volumes down to get drums to sound more realistic. Which catagory would I change the velocity in on the drum track anyway? And could you name some drums and cymbals to start out with to get a ggod rythum going? I'm new to the drum world.

Bass drum - the boomy drum (the dum dum in a beat)
Snare - is the pop drum. as in dum dum pop, dum dum pop
hi-hats - are the tst in a beat, that usually go in 16th time, tst tst tst tst
Cymbols are the crashes you hear
Toms usually come in three flavors (on a starter kit anyway) and they have 3 different tones. Usually used for fills, digga digga digga digga

Now that will be $40 for the lesson. I take paypal.
