Using analog mixer in conjunction with usb interface?

So I have a Yamaha MG8/2FX mixer and it has the standard 1/4" output jack or the stereo RCA to 1/8". I use a laptop to record, so I'm not big on the idea of using a new sound card. could I run a cable from the output of my mixer into an input jack of, say, an M Audio Fast Track? Or would this just be redundant and not improve my recording quality at all?

You definitely won't end up with improved recording quality. The only reason I'd see using a mixer is if you want to record multiple pieces of the band simultaneously. And then you would only be able to get all those pieces out of the mixer > into the M Audio > onto the sequencer as one track. It would be much better to ditch the the mixer and record one track at a time directly into the M Audio OR keep the mixer and get an interface with more inputs.

Alright. I figured as much, but I hadn't found anything that says exactly. Thanks a lot!

Found the answer to my issues. I just purchased a Behringer U Control usb interface that converts the analog mixer signal into digital signal. W00t.
