I would like to know if I can use my PC as a 4-track recorder. I would like to record a track, listen to it on headphones through my soundcard (sound blaster Live!) while recording a second track through the sound card.
Can the sound card play and record simultaneously? Is there any software (preferably free) that can facilitate this? Thanks for the help!

yes you can, you could probably do more than 4 tracks depending on what kind of cpu and harddrive you have. a good program to cut your teeth on is n-track studio found at www.fasoft.com while it's not free, the demo is useable and it only costs $35.00 to register, and it's worth every penny.

Good Luck

Yes. The best software and you won't believe how cheap is is through www.tracerteck.com.
But with a SoundBlaster Live! you won't be able to record all 4 tracks at the same time. You would have to get a sound card that would allow you to do that. If you want to spend the money, I also recommend Tracer's AudioMaster 2000. Combo multi-track midi software, if your serious about recording.
Good Luck
