Do i need an audio interface with MIDI inputs to use a keyboard to control soft synths?

nope!

I used to use an adapter that went into my game controller port. That worked fine.

I now use a USB keyboard and that's good too. :)

That makes things a lot easier then! I can probably do without MIDI altogether then.

Were the keyboards you mentioned the other day USB? If not which one are you using now?

I have M-Audio Keystation 49e. Sells for $99. Plug it to USB and that's it.

I'd kind of like something with more knobs on though... A couple of octaves would be fine. The MK 425C looks more like it, anyone used one of those?

I use the M-Audio Oxygen8 for my laptop....I'm considering buying another larger controller for my PC setup. I used to have an Evolution MK (can't remember the model number), but I traded it for a digital sound card.

I just looked at that one....I may go for that unless I want something that looks nicer :)

haha.. yea.. It actually looks much better in real life than on photos :p
...or maybe I'm just blinded by the fact that I finally have a MIDI keyboard

I dunno, that Keystation Pro88 is looking like a nice replacement for my used and abused Roland... and then I can add a triton rack to it :)

yea.. looks nice.. but costs coupla times more than 49e as well..

Dumb question here. Can I plug a USB keyboard directly into any PC (with USB) or do I need some kind of MIDI device on the PC itself.

I'm not an expert on Soft Synths, is there anywhere I can go to read about how to use them ?

Nah it's not a dumb question because you're finding out what you need to know. The keyboard would plug into the USB and no MIDI connection is needed. Keep in mind that you also won't need an adapter cable for the keyboard because it will get its power from the USB in the computer. Not sure if you knew that or not but I figured if you didn't know you might want to.
