Umm... I need a set that's not an entry level, but maybe as cheap as one. Would a used set be wise for this occasion?

A used set could be just what you're looking for, but if you are a beginner I would suggest having an experienced drummer with you to give the set a once over. I had the misfortune of buying a set that looked great when I bought it, but ended up needing a lot of work put into it before it was playing or sounding decent.
Good luck.

Thanks for the advice! I think I will look into it.

Mental Note: Never ever ever buy Sunlight Drums...they are not good. That is all.

Orange County Drums my good man, Orange County Drums. Either that or DW...one of the two...

about 2 months ago i found an old (early seventies i think) gold sparkle set at my local sam ash for $100. im not a drummer and dont know shit about drums but i bought them and talked the guy into throwing in 2 new kick drum heads and i bought new tom heads. i got a snare drum off of ebay for like $25 and a new hi hat stand for $35. i found some cymbals at pawn shops - avedis zildjian ride=$20 ,sabian crash=$40 and sabian hi hats=$45 - so for about $300 and lots of time trying to figure out how to tune drums (and play them) i got a good sounding kit. i recorded 2 of my friends bands recently and both of them decided to use my kit over their own. also i just recorded another band whos drummer bought some old slingerland shells for like $125 or so and put some time into them and they sounded awesome and looked very rock n roll. just shop around a bit and youll find a good deal on a good kit that maybe just needs a little work. rock on

You could build your own kit.
All you're really doing is assembly. Have them drill the shells, and then you can either Finish the kit in a woodgrain (I went with some hand rubbed Poly finish for a natual Maple kit).

I built my own, and got the exact sizes I wanted. DW wanted almost 4 grand for ONE of the Kick drums that I wanted . I built the entire set for about $1200.

Of course, it's bit larger than most, and the kicks had to be special ordered.
Here's the setup:

(2) 16" x 28" Kicks (yes twenty EIGHT)
(1) 16" x 20" Floor
(1) 14" x 18" Floor
(1) 12" x 15"(between kicks on Snare stand)
(1) 8" x 14" "Pearl" Free Floating Snare.

You could build a top of the line 5 piece for about $500 bucks or more. My Kit totally blows away afriends kit (he even said so). He bought DW's, that ran him $3,500.00, and my kit smoked his in tone and sustain.

To find out more go to:
http://www.drummaker.com/

It's a place called DRUM SUPPLY HOUSE. They sell Lugs, Shells, and all of the hardware.
The Shells are 6-ply, 8-ply, and 10-ply Maples shells from Keller.
I spent alot of time on the phone with DSH owner Andy Foote, and man-He knwos alot about drum making, and he was very helpful in how to finish them and stuff.

The kit looks cool, and sounds awesome.
