I currently own and use an Alesis Studio 32 16 channel mixer. I was thinking about purchasing an outboard Mic Pre such as an RNP. Since I mix everything "outside of the box" my friend suggested that upgrading to a mixer with nicer pres/EQs would be a larger step in sound quality for me at this point.
He recommended that I check out the RAMSA Wr-S4416. I have been watching them and the price looks right but I want to make sure im not overlooking any other options.
So here is sort of what im looking for.........

-Planning on buying used (around $600 maximum)
-At least 16 channels with mic pres on all channels (would like to go up to 24 channel but the price may be too high)
-direct outputs
-tape returns
-phantom power
-a few subgroups would be nice but not nescessary
-Descent EQ on all channels
-An INLINE CONSOLE would also be great but not nescesarry either

So any suggestions? I've got a few days before I need to know something on the Ramsa. I don't have to buy untill december but the Ramsa is available Locally. Someone hit me with some ideas...............

Anyone ever used the Soundtracs SOLO 24x4x2 ? It looks like it might be in my price range as well......

The best bang for your buck would be a Soundcraft M12. The m series have the same mic pre design as the Soundcraft Ghost. It also has direct outs on every channel and the direct outs are pre/post eq switchable which is nice.

The m12 won't work for me because its only 12 channels. I need at least 16 if not more on most projects.

You can also look at the Souncraft FX16 which has 16 XLR inpus and directs outs. It also has be noted that the M12 has 16 inputs 12 XLR and 4 Stereo.

Here is another great option for you the Crest CPX2416. This is a little over your budget by $250.00. Drop me a PM and I'll give you a price.

Deepwater thanks again. Im not really looking to buy new in this price range. I think there are at least a few nicer quality older consoles to be had at this price that will surpass the abillity of a new console in this price range.
Im really leaning torwards the Soundtracs Solo right now. This series is supposed to have excellent Pres and Eqs according to Harvey Gerst. I am pretty sure that I can get a 24 channel version within my price range.

I know it's not totally what you're after, but i agree with deepwater... the M12 is a brilliant desk ! i have one, and those ghost pre's are quiet, fat and have huge headroom. but if you need 16 channels, how about a second hand mackie 1642 or 1604 ? they've got the VLZ pre's that are supposed to be awesome, and have 16 XLR ins over 16 mono channels, and 4 subgroups !

Thanks for the help guys. I picked up the Soundtracs solo tonight and squeaked just within my budget. 24 channels and the pres/Eq are supposed to be very good according to Harvey Gerst, looking forward to getting it all hooked up and running.
