Well, I went ahead and took the plunge in buying this product despite the very mixed reviews on it. Getting it work at all required switching over to a different recording software (N-Track as opposed to Cool Edit Pro) but this wasn't too big a deal.

I was so surprised when I actually got 4 simultaneous track recording to work! It's so cool!!

However....

On all my 4-track recordings, after about a minute of recordig, i get some intermittent clicks or popping sounds. About 1 every 2 seconds. This lasts for about 30 seconds in the recording, and then goes away. One some recordings it occurs 1 minute into the recording, on others after 2 minutes, etc.

I figured this was possibly due to the latency setting. I attempted to set the latency as high as possible (pushing the buffer all the way up) but this didn't solve the problem.

Anything else I can try?

I'm running it on a Compaq Armada PII-400 with 192MB RAM, windows xp, and about 10 gb free hard drive space.

Thanks!

why did you swith from cool edit? does it not work with the quattro? how did you set up the quattro control panel/in/outs and windowsXP and n-tracks so that you got 4 tracks to record at one time?

o-ron. i know you dont want to hear this , but i have to be honest
running win xp WITH multitrack software you need at least 512 ram.
you will continue to have problems imho. i'm just a humble computer engr giving you some honest advice. basically your laptop is old.
just telling the truth. peace.

Wow, this is an old thread. Anyway, here's a reply.

Actually, it just turns out that the Quattro is crap. Every review I found confirmed my suspicions.

I upgraded my laptop to a P4 1.6ghz, 512mb DDR, and 32mb DDR dedicated video, and usb 2.0 and firewire ports. The SAME problems persisted.

I dumped the Quattro and bought the MOTU 828 Firewire interface. Beautiful piece of machinery - works perfectly.

The Motu device works perfectly with Cool Edit Pro and NTrack studio. Cool Edit (now Adobe Audition) is better, though.

For single or 2 channel recording, the Quattro is ok. For anything more, get the MOTU. ALso, there is a newer version (848?) that has more I/O's and higher sampling frequency. The Firewire port has 40 times the bandwidth of USB 1.0

Probably M-Audio has a usb 2.0 device by now.. but I haven't paid much attention lately.

Hope that helps,
