I have a laptop with Cubase 5 on it, so far I have been using it with my one mini-jack input for multitrack recording, and it's fine for that. However i want to use it for some live recording, basically recording more than one channel at the same time (ie, recording a drum kit). What's the best and cheapest way of connecting more than microphone into my machine??

At least 8 channels would be nice, I've tried to find out if theres some sort of USB hardware (like a box or something) that will take multi audio inputs. Does USB have the bandwidth for this or what? should i be getting a PCI card? What would work with the mixers in Cubase?

Please help if u can,

Well, I have this USB-MIDI Interface. Gives me 6 MIDI inputs. But thats MIDI. I'd have to say your best bet is a mixer. At some places, you can rent mixers. Usually, more of a live board-type of application, rather than a studio application. But, never-the-less, it would work quite nicely, and most likely, would have the mic-pre's on the board.

Almost all USB devices are limited to 2 audio tracks (though there is one that claims it can give you 4). USB just does not have enough bandwith. USB 2.0 is poised to hit the market, but FireWire is probably a better choice right now. I think those two Mark of the Unicorn boxes are the only ones on the market so far that support FireWire but I bet there will be a bunch more within the next year...

i'm waiting for the next version of firewire(800Mbps) and soundcard that supports it before getting a firewire soundcard.

Thanks ppl

I have access to a spirit folio desk and fx unit, what i'll probably do is record my entire kit onto the laptop, but mix it live from the folio onto it. Not ideal, but it's just for demos anyway.

Cheers again
