USB Midi Latency?

Hey i recently bought a Casio CDP-120 which only has USB MIDI. I have tried recording or using the monitor function in FL Studio 10 aswell as Reaper. Both however give me latency issues when i broadcast it through my speakers.

For the most part i think my problem has to do with the MIDI Output because i read something about Microsoft synth table was no good. Is there anyways to work around this? The latency i am getting is about a quarter of a second to a half a second.

On another note i also bought a Audio Interface cause i was hoping to record with a mic aswell. The audio interface is Scarlett 2i4 and the Mic is a MXL 920. That being said maybe there is some adapter that turns the USB MIDI into the more traditional Midi? That way i can plug the keyboard to the adapter then into the actual audio interface itself.



I'm completely new to all of this stuff so please bare with me. I am sort of a computer geek so i am pretty certain that it wouldn't be my computer causing the latency hardware wise. I'm running a core i-5 processor OC'd to 4.7 GHZ aswell as 8GB Ram. My sound card is a Creative Sound Blaster Recon3D PCIe. I'm still learning a lot of things especially with the DAWs. Latency is purely a function of the soundcard and its drivers.

Midi thru usb is just fine (I use it myself). Usb is a far fatter pipe than midi was designed for.

You want to use ASIO drivers on the Scarlett and ignore the soundblaster.
 
Its weird cause i downloaded ProteusVX and the latency on that is actually bareable. Is there anyway to fix the Keyboard portion of it? Are you saying that i should be able to route the keyboard to the scarlett and just use the scarlett as the only output?

I actually dont have studio monitors so is there anyway to continue using my regular PC speakers? I'm on a tight budget with limited space so i haven't purchased it. I didnt think that it would be neccesary.
 
It is. Use the decent interface and get some monitors.
Onboard soundcards and soundblasters are for gaming, not music production.
 
Damn i guess the only real way to avoid buying monitors is to use the actual keyboard's speakers right? I mean i'm only going to recording one thing at a time. For the most part atleast.

Theres no way to route the keyboard to the audio interface so it skips the sound card?
 
I just dont understand why im lagging more when using DAW incomparasin to proteusVX
 
Plug your midi controller into your pc via usb, And use your external sound card as the audio output
 
External sound card as in my audio interface right? For some reason im not sure how to get sound from the keyboard through my computer and to out of the scarlett 2i4. Any pointers on how i would configure that?
 
And yes, your scarlet is your audio interface, let me know what daw you are using and i will try and help
 
I'm currently trying to do everything on reaper and thank you ahead of time for trying to help
 
Open reaper, Go into options-preferences. Go into devices and by the sounds of it you are using the Direct sound option. Next to where it says Audio System there will be a drop down menu. Click on it and change from Direct sound to the ASIO driver. After you have done this you may need to configure the outputs but apart from that you should be good to go. Load up a synth and see if it has worked. The sound will be coming out of your external sound card so you may need to plug in some speakers or headphones, if you havent already done so.
 
The way to utilize the internal sounds from your cdp-120 is through an external mixer.

Plug the outputs of the keyboard into the mixer and connect the mixer to your speakers - which you're tring to avoid buying, if I read your posts correctly.

You'll need to plug the outputs of scarlett 2|4 into the mixer, and if you need to buy a mixer too get one big enough to accomodate all 4 outputs of your interface.

To sum it up, you need to spend roughly $200 to get rid of your latency. And your idea of using your keyboard's speakers as monitors is not going to work.

He doesnt need gear, he just needs to change his preference settings
 
THe problem i am running into now is that i cant get any sound from the keyboard through the computer to my Scarlett. Right now i have the Audio System set to ASIO, The ASIO Driver is ASIO4ALL v2 and the first and last input is scarlet 2i44 USB 1 &2 and the output range first and last is Scarlett 2i4 USB 1 & 2. Any tips?
 
Ooo i actually got it to work. I just had to load a synthesizer to get sound. Do you guys know of any good piano VSTi? I wa shoping i could get a free one just to start with. BTW all the latency is gone... THanks!

Great. Download the demo of this: Pianoteq - Pianoteq 4

Great sound and a very small CPU hit. The demo has a couple of black notes missing but the stage version is just 99ees and is a very useful recorder/ MIDI exporter in its own right.
