usb mic or interface?

I posted a similar question on the microphone forum, but I'll try it here too. I have a laptop with no line input, so I need to purchase either a usb condenser mic or a usb interface and use my sennheiser dynamic mic in order to record vocals. There are usb condenser mics available on ebay for around 100 bucks, and there is a decent sounding usb interface (emu 0202) for a little more. If I buy the interface, I will be using my Sennheiser dynamic mic for a while due to lack of funds to purchase another mic in addition to the interface. If I get the usb mic I will be able to get a condenser mic (Marshall/mxl, Samson, Blue) which is supposed to be a lot better for vocals than a dynamic mic. Any opinions?

I'd go with the interface first, bypassing the laptop soundcard altogether. Why? I just don't know enough about those USB mics to recommend them to anyone. They are a one trick pony for sure, and your still stuck with meager connections for monitoring while recording.

If you can go firewire instead of USB, less trouble.

Thanks to both for the replies. As far as the firewire goes, I'm assuming that's the same as an IEEE 1394 port. I didn't even know my laptop had one til I checked just now(I guess that really makes me a newbie, eh?). What is the big advantage to a firewire interface? Do they cost extra bucks, and are they really worth it for recording electric guitar and vocals...and maybe some midi? Thanks

The firewire port would be the way to go. Although USB 2.0 and firewire are rated at about the same speed in mbps, firewire is a handsdown winner when it comes to audio IO.

That being said, check any firewire device you are contemplating for compatibility with your laptop, as all firewire chipsets are not created equal. Most audio firewire devices list specific recommendations for motherboard chipsets, the most common being Texas Instruments.

Do some searching on this forum about firewire audio interfaces and compatibility problems. Most people resolve these hardware conflicts with a simple pcmcia card, but you should know what you're getting into.
