US Recording Media: Seriously? LOL

Actually its not a bad idea to keep separate problems in separate threads regardless of machine. Otherwise a single thread gets too crowded with too many side questions. It's best to have a new thread with the specific problem in the title. Some members might know something about the new topic, but not about the original question... so they won't check back in on the original thread because they assume everyone is still talking about the original question.

Besides its not like this forum is so crowded we can't get a word in edgewise. Back in the day we'd have to scroll at least to the second page to see what happened overnight. Not anymore. Forums like this are comparatively dead.

Ooops! That would be me. Sorry about that. But the good thing is that all these little problems/solutions can be helpful for anyone owning a 388 and running into similar issues down the line. I've had a few guys say they had the same things happening already. And even if the questions might be simple, the answers from forum members are always enlightening and very interesting. That being said, if any of my questions should be in another place just let me know. I'm easy.

No. I believe it was another 388 owner. A new owner who was putting some serious work in to their machine. I don't have a personal problem with the guy, or you for that matter. But good threads were getting pushed to the bottom because of it. I think its great to have specific problems in plain view on the forum for all, but not when it hinders others from discussing or figuring out things that don't have to do with one persons machine (or one type of machine)

Just saying, If I wanted to talk about The Doors, I wouldn't make a thread for each one of their songs.

It's a great forum and I think everyone's threads are welcome here. Some people do enjoy talking about individual problems, even multiple problems on the same kind of machine.

I like doing massive threads that are too cumbersome for any normal person to read, and from which it's nigh impossible to extract or locate anything really useful.

Well, I'm off to try and find out where in my Ampex MM-1000 thread I posted about making my own reel table corks.

There's this thing called "search thread". It should help you find that relatively fast. :thumbs up:

Nah...more fun to click through 85 pages of "omigoodness am I still not done with that????"

You don't have to buy tape off of Ebay. There's plenty of new tape stock in the country right now from RMGI and ATR is doing well. -Jeff

There was a good post from someone else here that just vanished! :wtf: -Jeff

Yeah, sounds fishy to me. I see in his Twitter feed that he previously calls the GP9 "new unused," (Read leftovers) and then more recently "new production." But new production by definition would be anything they produced that hasn't been sold yet. The big problem for me is that the very nature of his Twitter activity makes it look like basically a one-man operation... one salesman with a very big brand name in his possession. It's very unprofessional considering Quantegy once sold 75% of all tape used worldwide. Kinda comical and sad really.

even in the last days of Quantegy 456 was still the staple product and is what most people would like to see come back first. I really don't think its going to happen with Hutt at the helm... if you can call it a helm. It's more like, WTF? More like one old guy in a little rowboat whereas it used to be an ocean liner. :)

ATR is not making GP9 for Peter and neither is RMGI. It could be aliens I guess. That tape required a different process to manufacture than either RMGI/Pyral or ATR uses and besides, why would they do it? They would be competing against themselves in an already limited market. GP9 was a very expensive tape to manufacture and was AMPEX's answer to 3M. They really didn't want to do a thick coat tape at AMPEX but they were forced into it with 499 and GP9. Both of those tapes were good and I don't recall very many GP9 issues since they were both introduced after the binder was improved by Hunt. -Jeff
