Me want.. me want.. where is this alleged product? I have not seen any evidence of SM911 until this announcement.
(I'm not sure I want to buy Dutch tape from the US, mind. Shipping from Oosterhout to Cardiff via Pennsylvania would be stupidity.)

1.Is this tape actually better than Quantegy?If so-how so?
2.Is their glee related only to their ability to purchase the tape cheaper,but charge us the same,therefore making a financial killing?Or will this tape cost the consumer less,too?

Not that I know of... I'm still waiting for free samples of 1/4" 468 and 1/2" 911 (and waiting and waiting and waiting)

We can only speculate on the reasons US Recording Media is making the switch. They don’t have the best prices… maybe they couldn’t sell enough of it at the new prices… I don’t know. Or maybe Quantegy isn’t keeping up. The fact that Quantegy now sells direct from their web store for about the same price could have something to do with it.
To my way of thinking an operation as big and well known as USR should be carrying all tape brands and let people choose what they think is best.
I still don’t know if RMGI is exactly the same as BASF/EMTEC because they never sent me any samples. And as far as I know, ATR Magnetics is just an unproven idea.
I could see USR adding new tape lines, but replacing Quantegy seems premature. It’s obviously not a smooth transition because at this moment you can’t buy shit.

I also use SM911 and SM468... depends on what I'm recording. 407 is my preferred tape for mastering on my 22-2.

To be honest I'm a little nervous about the change, I mean if this somehow pushes Quantegy out in other places, because I'm pretty satisfied with the 456 . I have no real tape noise with 456. That's without DBX. Do you think 911 will be as quiet? Nevertheless I'd like to try it.

I would love to have the old BASF/EMTEC products back, but not at the cost of losing Quantegy. So far USR is the only one to drop Quantegy for RMGI.
Who knows, we may be in for a Pepsi vs. Coke kind of deal as each manufacturer vies for a piece of the pie.
BASF/EMTEC always had a better rep for tape slitting, and thus smoother running tape. However, my own tests have shown that this has a lot to do with a superior 6-screw precision reel. The standard Quantegy reel is pretty flimsy and unbalanced by comparison.
Spooling 456 onto an EMTEC reel made it as smooth running as EMTEC tape. Specifically, it spooled just as evenly in FFW or RW, whereas the Ampex/Quantegy reels made for a very sloppy, uneven winding. Quantegy's 6-screw precision metal reel is just as good as EMTECs, if you can find them.
IMO, a smart vendor will carry RMGI and Quantegy because there are plenty of die-hard fans on both sides.
Right now Quantegy has the broadest selection for various applications and they probably always will, since they absorbed both Ampex and 3M’s magnetic divisions.
I still prefer GP9 over SM900, but SM911 and SM468 are great tapes. Every tape has a place and I will always have 456/457 and 406/407 around if nothing else.
