Now suppose I want something similar to the TASCAM US122, but not the TASCAM US122 because I'm using XP and I don't want to deal with all the mentionned crap...

What products should I look at??????????????????????????????????

I'd look at the Presonus Firepod or the RME Fireface. I'm a sucker for built in pres.

Both big steps up in $, but a big steps up in terms of pres and converters, too. The RME would be the last sound card you'll ever need, unless you're tracking orchestras.

you probably tried this but...

I had the blue screens too when I first installed - they went away when I started using the US-122 ASIO driver, instead of the generic default driver.

Best of luck; I comisserate with you on this problem.

By the way, I'm using the 122 on an IBM R40 laptop (centrino 1.3) with 512 megs ram.

I didn't realize there were two drivers. How do you make those settings?

I'm nervous, because I've got Win98SE and it works fine, but I need to upgrade to XP for another application!

sorry about the delay...

The driver is switched from within the recording software that you are using (and crashing your computer currently). I have used cubase le and cubasis vst and there is a "settings" menu for those. What are you using? If neither of the cubase products I mentioned above, try searching your undoubtedly pdf-ified user manual for your recording software for "asio driver". You want to select the one that says "us-122 24 bit".

Hopefully this helps.
