Urgent Help Needed

hey just thought id say hi, ive been looking on here for a while now and thought id join up. well to cut a long story short ive been doing some covers up in london of darren hayes/savage garden music and would like to set up a v small studion at home. I have no idea how to go about doing this, but is there anyway to go about doing it with software on a cmputer and seting up a microphone to that and recording like this. what equipment will i need to play backing tracks and record my own version on top. any help very much appreciated

The title of the thread says "urgent" help is needed.

Where is the urgent part? Am I missing something?

Anyway ... your question is a little vague. Need more info. Are you tracking just yourself or a full band? Live or a track-at-a-time? Oh yea, and it would be nice to know what, specifically you're tracking ... as in vocal? guitar? ukelele? Glockenspeel? What kind of space? A realistic budget might also be helpful.
