thanx.... looks interesting. Good deal on that universal shockmount

After more online research, I've concluded that I can afford either a pair of Rode NT-5s or a pair of CAD M179s. The priority here really is use as overheads, and I didn't like what a number of y'all said about the NT-1, MXL, and others for this application. The AT E5100s were hard to find a price or info on, so I'm still on the fence as far as they go. So, what gets the nod? CADs or NT-5s?

They're very different-sounding mics, so it depends on what kind of sound you like. I think the CAD's will give you a noticeably beefier sound. Can't think of any better way to put it, because that's what they sound like. :D Beefy as in very complimentary of the toms, and the snare has more weight to it. Kind of Bonham-ish. These things could be either good or bad, depending on personal preference.

If you're more in to a tighter sound as in funkier, snappier, not as much weight . . . think Chili Peppers, Stuart Copeland (Police), then you'd probably want to go with a smaller diaphragm -- this is where the NT5's would fit the bill a little better.

As far as the Audio Technicas go, full Compass lists all of their specials on their web site. http://64.213.162.194/specials/categories/AU0001/index.fcml

The AE-5100 would probably be somewhere in between the CAD and the NT5 in terms of type of sound you'd get (between the extremes of beefy and snappy). They're definitely more of a high end kind of mic with a slicker, more polished sound than the other two. Would probably be more accepted by the ultra gear slut. :D They originally sold for around $400 / piece when they came out.

For $500, you could mix and match a couple of options and have a bunch of decent mics:

get a matched pair of MXL 603s with shockmounts for $200. Great for drum overheads AND acoustic guitar.

Now you have $300 leftover; you could get a pair of NT5's for a slightly darker flavor and have two different pairs of matched SDC's.

Four quality mics for 5 bills. Just a thought;

I like the way you think. I guess Im a bang-for-the-buck guy

i weigh in with a vote for the CADs if you need them nowish. they are pretty common.

CADs have a fun larger than life feel to them, although often i think they sound like shit on vocals for some people. personally, i dont dig the SD condenser OH sound, so i am biased.

however, for $500 if you wait around a bit you can get more creative.

first of all, you might want to rethink the need for a stereo image on the OHs. if you do that, and are willling to drop $500 on a single mic, you are gonna step up a class.

hate to give away a good deal i am looking at, but atlas has an MBHO 603 with a SD cardiod head on it for $450. now that is a classy mic. one for the ages.

as far as stereo pairs, if you look around you can get a stereo pair of lower end earthworks for about $500. i got my sr69 for $250, two of those would kick ass. also you can get a pair of SROs for less than $500. those are really great mics. of course you have to be ready for OMNI mics if you get them.

jeez, you could also get a pair of beyer m260s for $500. will give you a TOTALLY different sound from any of those mentioned. they are my favorite OH mic, but you have to get ready for a different experience. they have totally smooth nice mids, rolled off top, little thick in the low mids, then they slope out of the way for the sub frequencies (dont get in the way of a kick mic, nice!)

really there are some big early decisions you need to make about the sort of sound you want.
