I have a pair of Alesis M1 MK II Actives

and I must say they do not sound as loud as they did when I first got them and they kind of distort at medium high levels. They physically do not look damaged.

Do you guys recommend buying new ones? If so, what is comparable under $300. (At least 6.5" woofer, 75W and a 1" tweeter at 25W).

Any ideas on what it costs to repair them?

These are alesis monitor ones...Id leave them in your backseat with the window open and make an insureance claim since it will get you more money...and you cant sell them broken.

Go on craigslist or to a pawnshop and find some monitors that are used in a real studio...I say this because you get to test them...and I see deals for under $300 on JBLs...Yamahas...Mackies...etc...all the time.

Which models in particular would you recommend that have the 6.5" woofer?
Also, why the dislike for the Alesis? Not worth repairing?

I bougt a pair for about $100 in the past...they werent very useful as studio monitors...I bought a better set of monitors used for even less...I dont think they are worth the expense to repair.

I found a pair of Yamaha NS10s at a pawn shop for $60 and never went back to the alesis...but Ive also seen JBL midfields and other stuff for cheap that are used in studios other than home studios mistaken for bookshelf speakers and such...keep your eye out for rediculous deals...they are out there.:)

just my opinion...

if i were you i would use this as a chance to spoil yourself and get some new monitors like darrin said.

but what i also suggest you do is keep the alesis monitors and use them for a DIY project and rebuild them cause 1). you get new monitors 2). you get a little project to do later on 3). when your done with the alesis monitors then you'll have more than one pair of monitors.

of course im someone who is very bored and unfortunately has way too much time on my hands so i love DIY projects.

just my opinion though.

Another cheap option is to learn how to mix with distorted monitors.
