I'm currently using two Delta 1010s in a Pentium 4, 3ghz, 2 g ram, using Windows XP Professional (sp3), with 3 UAD PCI cards, and Cubase 4.
I've been getting more clicks & pops as my projects expand. I've tried changing IRQ settings etc, to no avail.
I'm thinking of replacing the 1010s with 2 x Echo Audiofire 12s.
Two questions:
(1) if I remove the Delta 1010 PCI cards, insert a Firewire card, and then connect 2 x Audiofire 12s and keep the 3 UAD PCI cards, am I likely to get a noticeable improvement, firstly with respect to the clicks and pops? Put another way, is freeing up one PCI slot but adding the firewire port to run 2 x AF12s likely to put more strain, or less strain, on my system?
(2) will I be ok in mixdowns etc, when using Cubase plus UAD and other plug-ins? Right now, with my Delta 1010s, I increase the buffer size to the max (2056 or something) when I mix, because high latency doesn't really matter at that point, and I can use plug-ins etc. No pops or clicks initially, but as I add instances of various plug-ins, the clicks and pops return.
I recognize that I may well have to upgrade my computer, and I'm prepared to do that (and if I do, I'll probably add a UAD2 card), but I figure I'll try the Audiofire 12s on my existing system first, and see how they work, before deciding whether to upgrade my computer as well.
Any thoughts on the Echo Audiofire 12 compared to the Delta 1010?
Thanks,
Rio
