I posted the lyrics of this song a while back. I recorded it, and though the mix kinda sucks ....here it is.

lyrics (copyright 2003)

theres a new invasion here in Dixieland,
by folks that want to change the things that they don't understand,
the stars and bars are gone now,
and you won't see cornel Reb no more.
we've lost the 1st few battles,
but this time we won't lose the war.

Chorus
we're sons of sons of rebel sons who rebell against the things,
that rob us of our heritage till none of it remains.
if you don't love us leave us,
be gone with the wind.
its time here down in dixie for the south to rise again.

class action lawyers lead the charge
attacking our paychecks,
now they want to take away our guns,
which freedom will be next?
break out the tar and feathers,
and load 'em all up in a truck.
send 'em back to new york city,
man, down here we've had enough.

repeat chorus

political corectness is a cancer we don't need,
its grown and taken over every aspect of our speach,
they've banned the 10 comandments,
and prayer from all of our schools,
while they teach our little girls now,
about a womans right to choose.

i changed a line or 2 since the last time i posted....

mainly "class action lawyers lead the charge they suck on our paychecks"
to
"class action lawyers lead the charge attacking our paychecks"

I thought "class action fit nicely with "attacking"...and it sings better

"suck" came from the original way I wrote the verse....

"them city slicker lawyers
keep us wondering whats next,
and the thing that sucks
is they're all suckin' on all of our paychecks"

i think its a stronger verse now because "attacking" and "lead the charge" fits the civil war theme of the song

tell me what you think so far guys....I can rewrite this sucker again and change the music....its kind of a work in progress

sons of rebel sons

Yes, I'll admit it, I listened to it more than once. I find the repition of all the letter S's and R's in the chorus to be especially effective and so is the "... don't love us leave us." (a great example of antithesis also) I think the vocals could use a little more umph, but it sounded great to my ears. write on. La

Love the song Mike! Very thought out piece of work man. You ought to be famous by now bro:) tell Donnie uncledave said hey! Good stuff!

thanks guys.

I agree the vocals can be better lala.
whats happnin' dave.
when are you gonna come over to our studio and teach me how to mix? I want to hear more of your tunes bro!

Are you serious?

As someone from the UK I was under the impression that the South HAD risen again? That the Southern states were the ones with the booming economies (comparatively) and no-one could get to the White House without winning in the South? (Bush, Clinton, Bush Jnr, and so forth from the South).

The only thing missing from your song was a call to bring back segregation!

I don't believe in segragation.
But, there was an old south that beleived in giving thanks to God, taught manners and respect for their elders, were raised on guns and hunting, and was composed of men that no matter how filthy their mouths were....never swore in the presence of a lady and ladies that had class.
At one point in history they flew the stars and bars and fought for their right to govern themselves and not be spoon fed by the federal govenment. They made mistakes and fighting intergration and cival rights reform was one of them............but

I don't think the federal government and a few liberal lobbyists should pretend there never was an old south and pass legislation to erase the symbols of the old south.

they took away the Ole Miss mascot....cause he's dressed like a plantation owner.............they have had that mascot since way before I was born and im 43...Ole Miss quit doing the rebel flag thing because of federal money that would dry up if they continued. They are the fuckin' Rebels and can't use a rebel flag. Next it will be the name "Rebels", maybe they can be the Ole Miss Yankees since that is politically correct.

I mean, think about this line from my tune

"they've banned the 10 comandments and prayer from all the schools while they teach our little girls now about a womans right to choose"

that would never be the case in the south without federal laws, city slicker lawyers, and political correctness.

Why?

I love the south and it's culture but you have to wonder why people are putting up a fuss for your song to be right on.

Why don't you accentuate the positives rather trying to school those people that have numerous reasons to despise what the south too often intends?

"Where the skies are so blue!"

-groove the communication baby! There aint no bad guy to isolate.

In some ways I see parallels in what the U.S. South stood for back then and the current debates we have here in Europe over ever closer European integration. Essentialy it was about the rights of individual States v the rights of a Feberal Gvt. and the Feds won. In Europe ancient states such as France and the UK are giving up sovereignty to the centre in Europe and there's a big debate going on here in the UK about this - are we loosing our right to self determination?

The Southern states decided to break free of the Union, hence the war, they weren't allowed to do that. In the future will nations be able to withdraw from the European Union if they wish to? See the parallels?

What undermined the South's case in my view was its support for slavery, so from that point of view its right that it was defeated.

Anyway, all this stuff is selective history and harking back to a 'golden age' that never really was. IMHO it's best to look to the now and the future. It's all we have.

I agree its best to look to the future.

I wrote the song because thats the way I felt about things that given day.....I was watching the news and they were covering the debate on whether to leave the 10 comandments in the alabama court house.

just a snapshot of my mindset at the time.

Its funny, the United States is banning Christian symbols....the reason the Pilgrams came to this country was to be able to practice Christianity the way they saw fit.

I see what your talking about with regard to Europe. The European Economic Comunity will end up being a United Europe at somepoint in time and Individual countries like France and England will not really have any sovorienty.

you know, the rebel flag has been basically banned in this country...so...it might be a good flag for the factions that fight for soverienty in Eorope.

"Its funny, the United States is banning Christian symbols....the reason the Pilgrams came to this country was to be able to practice Christianity the way they saw fit."

Well IMO the State shouldn't be involved in anything religious, but ensure that citiziens have the freedom to follow their own religion, or indeed choose not to have any (like me) free from persecution. Therefore there should be no religious symbols (like crucifixes) etc in courthouses, only secular symbols. Such symbols can only be offensive to people of a different faith (or non at all).
The great thing about the U.S. is that it was a place for people to go to flee persecution or poverty. It's important that Christian values and teachings are not allowed to stifle freedom of thought and enquiry (for example the teaching of evolution).

Funily enough here in the UK we have a state church, the Church of Engalnd, which means we are literaly a 'Christian' Country with the Queen as the head of a Christian church. That's wrong in my view, but I don't see anything happening here to change it. This ironic because people here are generaly not very religious.

Anyway, I'm waffling, sorry...

Well I liked it even though I have my reservations about voicing my support for Christian symbols in governmental "neutral" places, antiquated flags, and the like.

Everyday when I listen to AM talk radio, I will hear some Repulican going on about how this IS a christian nation, and this scares me more than a little. Though they argue that seperation of church and state is NOT in the constitution (they may be correct in this) I think it certainly should be.

Inquisitor: Confess your sins and all shall be forgiven (thud, splash!!!)

Sounds like you're spot on with the redneck point of view. You make your points nice and clear.

As long as you don't fool yourself that you're speaking for ALL of Mississippi. I'd bet precious few black Mississippians agree with much of anything you're saying here.

Daf

1) not many blacks support the preservance of the rebel flag and the old miss cornel reb mascot

2) alot of blacks are against blood sucking lawyers that have really hurt Mississippi

3) alot of blacks want their children taught christian values instead of teaching them that the THEORY of eveolution is a proven fact (and dosen't have more holes than swiss cheese) and there is no God....oh yeah, and that abortion is OK

im not Meatloaf but "2 outta 3 aint bad"

Who said I was speaking for all Mississippians anyways?
Its a song I wrote about the world as I saw it that given day. Im not the elected spokesman for Mississippi....im a songwriter who dosen't give a shit if his songs are politically correct or not.

this thread is going in a direction that I would rather not go. Don't get me wrong, I can hold my own with anyone on a political debate..........I just don't think a songwriting forum is the place to talk politics.

I got sucked into it with the "the only thing missing is the call to bring back segregation" comment. That is not what my song or myself is about.

the song is about outsiders and insiders and its just a song and one point of view. A song im proud of I might add.

I *DID* say you made your points well.

Your refrain just about comes out and says you speak for the entire south. Were I a southern black man, "it's time for the south to rise again" would make my skin crawl.

It's hard to write a rant that doesn't step on some toes that you didn't mean to step on.

BTW, this is a personal aside, I'm Christian, and my church has no problem with evolution. I also HIGHLY doubt that public schools are teaching that there is no God - they're required to be silent on religious issues.

Yours in Christ,

Daf

im downloading your song in the mp3clinic. I enjoy listening to the different members recordings and im learning alot. I wish i had of taken more time with my tracking and mixing on the rebel song.

You're right, the schools don't teach that there isn't a God...and they don't teach that there is one either. They teach a theory as absolute fact that is not compatible with Christian beliefs of creation....and let a child draw his or her own conclusions.

Im not a scholar, but I have heard very knowledgable arguments on both sides of the asile and it takes alot of faith to believe either one.

I look forward to hearing your song.

thanks for checking my tune out daf

Our (Catholic) belief is that the first 11 chapters of Genesis are mythical - not in the sense that they are false, but in the sense that they are allegorical, a poetic presentation of the prehistory of the Jewish people.

There's a great quote from the big Indian in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", where he says, "this story never happened, but it is absolutely true." That's not exactly how we view Genesis on creation, but it's the same concept - it happened like this, but who says a day has to be 24 hours?

Looking forward to your comments on the mp3. Apologies for my voice - God gave it to me to make sure I stayed humble...;)

Uh... i hate your lyrics. i guess thats harsh. but i guess not everybody can love everybody's lyrics. seriously, just because you support rednecks doesn't mean you have to use simple words and cliches.

by the way, i don't think you know what a class action lawyer is. those are the lawyers who represent a large group of people (a class) with a complaint against a single entity -- say, a giant corporation like Ford -- for damages sustained in rollovers of SUVs, or what have you. Class action lawyers are not stealing your paychecks. Chances are, if you ever find yourself associated with one, you will end up with more money in your pocket.

thanks for the class on class action lawyers....is it really true they represent a.....class

ITS TWOO...ITS TWOO!! (gimme a break)

I know what a damn class action lawyer and a class action lawsuit is.
If a lawyer takes on a class action case and wins...does the company have to pay out big money??
do ya think they might go up on their prices?
do you think that would cause the consumer to pay more?
do ya see where im going??

let me bring it down a notch so's you may understand

(pay close attention)
the class action lawyer bone is connected to the insurance company bone..
the insurance company bone is connected to the premium bone...
the premium bone is connected to the company thats being sued bone...
the company thats being sued bone is connected the the retail price bone...
the retail price bone is connected to the the wallet bone...
and the wallet bone is connected to the PAYCHECK bone...

why do you think a pack of cigarettes are damn near 4 bucks?
A handgun is over $400?

do your homework and you'll know why.

Im in the Insurance business but what would I know about class action lawsuits that insurance companies pay for...duh

If you hate my lyrics im fine with that....you say I use simple words so i will have to say "thanks for the compliment"

but when you say that im using cliches I have to wonder if you know what a cliche is

"If you don't love us leave and be "gone with the wind" is the only cliche in the song....and it fit the civil war theme of the song so well I used it.

I would like to take a look at some of your original lyrics if you get a chance to post some.
be cool

Priorities?

"why do you think a pack of cigarettes are damn near 4 bucks?
A handgun is over $400?"

IMO both these items are too cheap! Put way MORE tax on 'em is what I say!

Seriously though, I think its informative that you feel 'all riled up' about the price of a hand gun. I mean how many occasions does a person have to go out and buy one of those things anyway. if it's 'often' then there's something seriously wrong with either the person's priorities or the society they are living in! Like would society be al ot better if there were no tax on handguns and they were only $40 insted of $400 - er, I don't think so!
