I'm just about finished producing my first cd and i want to know which is the best way to go about getting a barcode.

1. should i go ahead and purchase it out right

or

2. get it from somewhere like CD BABY in a package deal.

i guess im wanting to know the advantages/disadvantages of both. any help anyone could give would be greatly appreciated!!

Let me give you my advice. I released a cd in late October last year. I went to a duplication company. To get them duplicated, (only 500 to start) I cost roughly $3 a disc... this included printing on the dic, full color one page insert and full color tray card and shrink wrap. I decided to get a barcode and it was only a $15 one time fee. So basically I paid $15 and got around 2,000 units with it on it. Definitely get it in a packaging deal. And also, don't base all of your marketing strategy on the internet, cuz you'll get assed out. Me and my budy just hit the streets, (malls, clubs, school parking lots, colleges, bowling alleys, pool halls) and sold almost 2,000 that way in a little over 2 months. With that and word of mouth, then you can put more into mom and pop stores and the internet.

Hope this helps,

Springfield

so nobody else has released a cd with a upc barcode and can give me any info on this !!

Package deal....

Keeps things neat... The do it yourself route may end up being a sticker or some shit.

i meant to reply to this yesterday.

if you decide to get your own bar-code, then you can assign sub-code numbers to your individual releases.

the uniform code counsel (http://www.uc-council.org/) give you a number to which you can add sub-numbers to distinguish your individual products. the more sub-numbers you request, the more its gonna cost you.

i decided not to do it because it just cost too much money and Ras Lidj's EP CD wasn't in any major stores so soundscan is no issue.
