Up to $1500 for just monitors

I got up to $1500 for monitors going into to listen with a couple of CD's I like and some of my own mixes what monitors should I pay attention to the most?

Of course the less money would leave me more room for other things BUT I also understand how important these are:)

I did a search and had a hard time finding exactly this budget just less then this:)

I need to know things like active or non and if not active then what is a good clean amp to use:) I want real close to studio quality as I can get for the $1500:)

I just want a list of ones used by the pros or semi pros to focus in on and then try out the less expensive models from there:)

If I had that much to spend, I would seriously look at the Blue Sky series of active speakers. They are (according to reviews)one of the clearest,full range (3 way) near field systems you can find.

Weird analogy I think.

Since it seems you are beginning or about to move forward in music/recording, a pair of Yorkville monitors either passive or active would get you started and leave you mucho pesos to buy cables, and a good amp, and have enough left over for a large night on the town.

You can research the Yorks on this site and contact the company on the net to find out the closest dealer in your locale.

But, if money doesn't matter, buy what your ears like the best.

Monitors

While you’re looking for monitors, take some time to think about the acoustical character of your recording/control room. Good monitors are important but they may disappoint you if your room is poorly designed. If I was going to spend $1,500, I would use 1/3 (?) of that on bass traps, diffusers, etc. In addition, I would look for someone to give me design advice about the room, including information about accoustic issues and solutions. You might also get some advice on the need to analyze and EQ the room.
 
Very cool!! I dont have a bluesky dealer near me to hear them.

I read a lot about Yorkies on the board and have them on the list to listen to along side the more expensive ones:)

And very good advice I should probably worry a lot about the acoustics in this basement I am in a lot of cement:)

On my list are:

Yorkies (any model suggestions)

Maudio BX8

KRK (any model suggestions)

Genelec

Mackie

Yamaha (any model suggestions)

Behringer truths

Alesis (any model suggestions)

Tannoy (any model suggestions)

Have missed any of the more expensive models? Or any other manufacturers and models you suggest?

I am really trying to hear a difference in the more expensive models compared to the very good but cheaper brands and models:)

I will be looking into acoustics but other then a vocal/acoustic coffin I am uncertain I will need a whole lot because I am almost 90% digital.

I do plan on Micing a guitar amp and possibly bass in the future and maybe some miced acoustic guitar so do I need more then a well constructed coffin?

I suspect the acoustics in this room are not bad for mising but arent nearfields close up so the acoustics of the room are minimized?

I'm with dwillis - having recently bought a pair of Mackie 824s, they've primarily served to show me how acoustically weird my room is. I'd get the best monitors I could for half your budget, and spend the other half making sure that the environment was acoustically together.
 
Any suggestions on what to buy for a basement? Pretty much a U shaped room.

Should I get acoustic panels like a cubicle?

Room acoustics are important in both tracking and mixing. Thus, even if most of your recording is “digital” or direct from an instrument to your board/recorder, room acoustics will affect the way your mixes sound on the monitors. Almost all rooms produce standing waves at various frequencies. And, unless tamed, these waves will interfere with your ability to judge what’s coming out of the monitors. Sadly, near field monitors will only partially address this issue so you often need a combination of monitors and acoustical materials. There is some debate about the need to “balance” a room by putting an EQ between the recorder and the monitors. But, if you have serious acoustic issues that can’t be addressed with materials, this might be a necessity. So what materials do you need? The short answer is that it depends on the size/shape of your room and what’s in the room. You may need bass traps, some foam for walls/ceilings at the mix position and some diffusers. I would look at some of the manufactured products from Auralex or other companies and do some research on acoustic materials. If your handy with basic carpentry, you may be able to save $$ by constructing some materials yourself. There are plans on the internet. Many people will also develop makeshift solutions by adding carpet to floors, curtains to windows, and even things like bookshelfs that help attack reflected sound. You might also track down the formula for calculating standing waves. It’s out there on the net and it’s an interesting exercise to plug in your room’s dimensions at look at where there are theoretical problems. Finally, if you have a fair amount of cash, there are consultants that will do this type of work--including some architectural firms.

Take a listen to the EVENT TR8 or 6 or 5, depending on your space and room. but definately you can spend some of the $$ for extras.
the EVENT monitors not only sound great but they're not too pricey....their response is very true, closer to what your mixes will sound once burned on CD.
check them out.
with the left over money you could buy a lot of stuff you may need.

Thanks!! You know what I decided to do is get the Yorkville monitors and actually the event 20/20 bas as back ups.

But I havent tried the event tr8s or 6 or 5's might be more interested since it will be my second pair. not getting the back ups right now but ordering my Yorkies this Friday:)
 
the TR series is a little better that 20/20s...i like it better anyway.
