Unwanted Noise

Hey Folks!

quick question. how do I set the noise gate in acid pro to filter out some un-wanted background hiss? I've searched everywhere, but cannot find any examples of settings. maybe a site to read up on? Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree, is it possible?

Sonic Foundry's noise reduction plugin would pry be better, but you can use a gate.
Basically a gate will silence anything below the threshold you set.
Find the level that the hiss/noise is at and set your threshold ever so slightly above that point.
You'll pry do fine using short attack and release times.
Just remember, any material that may be wanted that occupies that same threshold of the hiss will get silenced as well.

After searching around abit more I've found a lot of info, but this site actually breaks it down better. Can you apply a noise gate after recording?

My bad, I think I've been reading things wrong. Do you apply the gate before or after the recording? If you apply during recording, are you supposed to record silence, then set the attack and release based on that? The site shows an example of using a gate on a recording already made.

I'm confused.

if you have a track already recorded and it hisses.
try a threshold setting on the gate around -28 db to around -20 db.
you will hear when the gate is starting to cut out real signal.
it will get choppy on playback. just experiment.

What about Adobe Audition?

I'm no expert like the ones from whom you've heard my I've found removing hiss very simple in Adobe Audition. There is a plugin just for removing hiss but I use the noise reduction. It allows you to take a 'noiseprint' and use this to remove noise in the track. Where the noiseprint will be an area of just the noise and wanted material. Of course some of the track might get removed with the noise but I'm happy with the results I get, Plus it's very fine tunable.

The best method is to find the source of the noise and eliminate it or reduce it as much as possible.
Most likely it is due to whatever gear you are using (it's noise floor or internal noise).
Paying close attention to your gain structure and using quality gear will go a long way toward offering noise free recordings.

At any rate, it's fine to apply gating to the already recorded material. You'll just have to experiment with the settings.

I'm pretty sure it's my cheap-ass audio board. I'm heading to the states for 2 weeks to visit family, and plan on hitting some pawn shops and stores. My wife believes this is a family visit. I on the other hand and making this purchasing trip (mmmwwwahahahahah)!!!! Have been doing nothing but research on what I plan on looking for.

1. Sure 57's
2. Small mixer under $400 (not sure yet)
3. Delta 44 or 66

Any input to these? Sound like a plan?

Sounds like a hellova plan .....
Check out a 1010LT and a Yamaha MG 16/4.
You may even be able to find them at a local Guitar Center once you make it to the States. They are both available through Musician's Friend also.

I mention the 1010LT over the 44 or the 66 because you never know when you may need the additional I/O. Plus it's dirt cheap.
