unwanted delay

i'm working with cakewalk musiccreator and an external audigy soundblaster. with absolutely no fx added through the card or the program i'm getting a delay whenever i arm a track to record (with mic). it's not there when i record something, but really gets in the way when trying to track over. any ideas?

Do a search on latency. This is a common problem, but I don't know how to solve it on an audigy.

Ditto on the latency diagnosis! Check for a software solution either in Cakewalk or your soundcard's driver settings. Look for a dialog box that allows you to change the "buffer" settings. If it's available, you will see numbers like 1024, 512, 128, 64, etc. The lower settings will hopefully reduce the delay you're experiencing. If not, you may have to live with the problem or upgrade to a soundcard/interface which offers latency reduction.
Unfortunately, lower buffer settings come at a cost--greater CPU strain. So, you may have to switch settings for recording and playback (low setting for recording; higher for playback).
