Unsynchronized when recording multiple tracks

Hi, I'm looking to record 1 vocal part and 2 guitar parts for a song, but when I record 1 guitar part, then go to record the 2nd guitar (with the first one playing) it is delayed a few milliseconds and makes it sound horrible. I tried putting the latency to "very low" under my MobliePre's settings, and this shortened it, but it's still not synchronizing. I've searched google some for this but haven't been able to find anything.

I'm currently recording with Sonic Foundry's Acid Pro v4, and I'm plugging into my computer's USB port via a MobilePre USB interface.

Thanks for any help!

Hmmm, I record with Acid Pro 4 all the time and have never had this problem. Have you checked the buffer settings in Acid? I suspect that your USB device is to blame, though. USB isn't known for speed.

My buffer is set to .24 seconds right now, I do remember fiddling around with it when I had a popping/clicking problem. Default puts it at .35 and doesn't fix it :(

Agreed on the Acid. But it shouldn't be the fact that he's using USB in and of itself, there's plenty of pipe for a couple of 44K+ audio streams without breaking a sweat.

Unless he is for some reason throttled back to USB 1.1 speeds, or he is using a PCI expansion card for his USB and that card is getting pushed back in priority in his system. For that matter, what kind of system is it, Dave? You have enough throughput?

G.

make sure you are not monitoring the input through acid, but through your soundcard.

+1

I can't think of any reason, other than monitoring latency, for you to record one thing in good time, go to record the exact thing on another track, and have one be consistently off.

Do you use a metronome?

Hmmm I'm a n00b, how do I change what I monitor the input through?

there should be some option somewhere in acid for "Disable Input Monitoring" or maybe "Enable Input Monitoring" or something like that. whatever you find, you want it off. your interface usually comes with some sort of mixer configuration software; you want to set up a pair of outputs to monitor the inputs...that is the lowest latency.

Ohh I think I get it... I unchecked the "monitor" box on the recording box and the little green/yellow/red bars disappeared. So I should only be monitoring it through my mobilepre right? I'll have to try this later after class.

I used to get this when I would have effects on the master buss and try to record another track. Happened every time.
