I'll despense with the "Damn guy , nice tune" stuff and get to what bothered me:

2:03 Made my right ear hurt. Don't know what it was, kinda' like a brain spike.

Drums were kinda weak.

Vocals were great !!

Damn guy, nice tune !!!!! :D

Dennis

Apart from the drums (should have a hard hitting snare) this is rocking man - STOP BEING MODEST.

It's great

Man Chris that AutoTune sounds great! :D

Great job! I have nothing else to add because compared to you I don't know what I am doing. :D

btw, i DON'T like the snare drum.....LOLOLOL

but again, i'm finally hearing your voice and you're squashing a lot of character with all the eq and effects i think. personally, i'm amazed with how well all you guys are doing without a compressor. i tried this little excercise last night and i was very uncomfortable without the compression crutch to lean on.

I'm going backwards...not just here either, lol...

erichenryusYeah, no kidding...but the choice of instruments on this mix makes it not really a very fair test. I mean, the drums (which I AM finishing, btw) are a loop, so they're already leveled out, the guits are nothing but distortion, which is compression by definition...the hardest part, obviously, is the vocal...especially trying to mix the background vocals...I mean, usually, my lead and bg vocal tracks look like bricks, so there's not much to "mix" once I get the first couple of levels right...it takes care of itself...with this, man...I spend stupid amounts of time moving those dots around on the screen, lol. Sorry about the snare sound, lol. This is actually one that you've liked in the past, but only after the mids have been sucked out of it, and some plate verb's added

scottboyer - you're one of those guys who falls into the "he doesn't have a clue what he's got" category. All your tunes (heavy/ or more laid back) have this huge emphasis on melody, which (to me) is enormously important...but they don't sound so...."the same," like mine, so shut up already, lol. Thanks for the post.

Abyyss - Needs a cracking snare, I know...lol. That dry snare actually gets a lot better with some EQ and high end verb (I think)...I've used it before, and it's not that controversial a snare, hehehee...once this thing's over, I'll screw it up nicely, like all my other stuff. Thanks a lot for the compliment, btw...no false modesty here at all...I'm just backwards most of the time...the ones I like, most people don't...the stuff I cobble together in 1/2 a day, people like...lol. Go figgur.

rustyfingers - not sure what's going on at that time mark...I'm not hearing it on the mp3, but that doesn't mean much...HOWEVER, if you really wanna' be annoyed, listen again @ 3:47-3:48 - You'll hear some kind of faint noises in the background that sound like 2 little kids screaming...(it's 2 little kids screaming, lol). BTW - If what you're hearing is some kind of digital pop, lemme' know...I had some weirdness with this one for the first time ever...I could hear some pops that sounded like the way my computer sounds when I've got the headphones on and somebody flips a light switch in my room...but I never could hear it on any of the individual tracks...totally pissed me off, lol. Oh and, "Kinda' weak" is putting it mildly on the drums, lol...it's basically a metronome with low end...I'm working on it. Thanks a lot for the listen.

Gidge - Hehehee...you have this way of making me feel something other than "crappy," and I appreciate it. That clip, btw...It's from an Australian singer (Kasey Chambers)...I think you'd probably like a lot of her stuff...the tune is called "These Pines." A lot of her tunes were recorded by her and her brother before she got an album deal, and he (the brother) just has a gift for guitar tones, IMHO...THAT sound is actually what I had in my head for the intro of this song...I'm not even close, lol. Anyway, thanks again...I"m catching up on some tunes in here...yours is on the list (like you just can't freaking wait for my opinion to grace your thread, right?...lmao).

BPOCO - lmao...you never read the responses to your posts...I can tell, b/c in my last one, when you mentioned the "change genre" thing, I pointed you towards a tune by "mbuster" that he let me sing on...it's definitely not country, lol...Exactly 180 degrees from my "comfort zone," lol. Look up "Neander" on NWR for a tune called "What Do You Want" if you wanna' hear hillbilly screaming, lol. Anyway, I'd appreciate the mix check on this one if you get a chance.

mbuster - You're flattering me silly...Don't. Stop it. (no, really...don't stop it, lol). Absolutely man...I didn't get a chance to fuck up the drums yet, but I'm working on it this afternoon...if you want an updated file, just check back. I'm TOTALLY on board with you helping out on this, btw - it's all about tone, and mine all bug me.

Badgas - Hey man, very cool of you to check out "Juliet." That one's still in the hopper, but your comments are the kind of stuff that matters most, I think. That "connection" factor is the brass ring, right? That song, btw, was borne from the creative medulla of Crawdad. It's rare that tunes I write 100% do anything other than depress people, lol.

Khompewtur - Thanks for the post, man. Hang around awhile longer...I've heard a lot of amazing offerings on this board...In the words of "B.Sabbath," I've heard a lot of crap too, lol...but I hear something that blows me away at LEAST once a week here...Regardless, it's cool that you found something in this tune; I appreciate it...and I haven't listened to any of your tunes yet...sheesh, you've got like 200 posts, and I'm still thinking you're a "new guy," lol...busy clinic these days, eh? I'm catching up on some listens today...I'm definitely gonna' hit some of yours.

wfaraoni - You crack me up. Fear not, my friend...this'll sound like ass soon enough, lol.

crawdad - thanks for taking the time to post that...you made my Christmas Card list with that one, lol. I'll shut up about it for now, but thanks.

This is terrific. I was thinking of doing something for this contest but no way is it going to sound this good. The vocal sounds great. I'd love to hear this taken that one step "over the cliff" to fill in a few gaps. The tune is excellent and definitely a style I am into, which is not usually the case on the forum. Not that I don't like hearing the diverse styles but something close to home is always nice.

bitch. just kidding. I'm with the rest, you don't need all that other shit. great playing, great tune, great vox, and great recording. and you didn't have to leave the room to piss. he he he he

Very cool to hear it all together man........
I am at work with shitty AST PCpeakers and printing presses running in the background.........

Good tune man.............
I will check it on my monitors sometime tonight...

This is soooo good. I love the feel of this song. I think I like some of those lower frequencies in there (warmer) before they get EQ'd or compressed out.

On to listen again...

Well you have now prooved it! It is your voice that has that processed/autotuned whatever sound to it. I really notice it when those first vocals come in. I want to make it clear that I think your voice sounds awesome here. The harmonies are great. :D :D Don't change a thing! Down with AT heretics!!! :D

Don't change a thing....

except maybe the snare. ;) Oh yeah and clean things. Oh and re-record that...lol.

Nice!:p

skids - I just got your PM a second ago...I always forget about checking those until I get an email that tells me I need to clean them out, lol...will respond. As for this one, thanks for checking it out. That vocal sound (phasing, sort of) is NOT my totally naked throat, lol...I doubled the part (sang it twice) so it's like a fake chorus effect. A lot of the backups are copied and offset too (more cheating chorus effect), but it was allowed, so I did it, lol. And yeah, I've just about decided it's my total lack of vibrato that sounds kind of "processed." I notice it most on live recordings when I'm singing backups...works pretty good for backups, btw...lol. Eric Johnson has a vocal style that I absolutely love, and while I know he's known for his guit skills, I think he's got a great voice...sounds the same live, too...it's just got a really smooth unwavering sound that I kinda' dig. (oh, and if you wanna' hear the total "naked truth," listen around 2:00 mark - "give up all of the games"...that's no doubling, no backups, no nuffin'... It'll give a better understanding of why I doubled it, lol. Thanks again.

dtb - Bitch. Thanks for the post, brother...I'm catching up... Yours is on the "listen list," ... soon as I finish these damned drums, lol.

joro - I'll bet printing presses add the badly needed percussive instrumentation that this needs, lol. Catch you later.

ashulman - Well thanks, man. Don't worry, it's going over the cliff practically as I type this...right into the ditch, lol. I appreciate the listen...now post something, lol.

Not being a big country fan, I'd say this is my favorite of yours. Lyrically, it was ok. But the music was terrific - all around. I just loved the tune. Loved the harmonies. Liked the sound of the guitars. I've always liked the sound of green guitars.

Small vocal sync issue at :44, something else weird around 1:17.

The harmonies maybe don't need to be panned as hard as they are. I'd nudge them just a little closer to center.

I'd then EQ, Compress, reverb, and autotune the whole damn thing. :D:D:D

Seriously, I really liked it.

EDIT: what did you do for drums? They sounded real nice.

Hello there,

Song is awesome, and I think the track sounds great. This is also the second time I've heard the AKG 3000 (the other is the Listening Sessions site) and, I know it gets knocked a lot, but I think it sounds pretty good too.

Can I ask what you are tracking to?

MMM - See, you're the guy that I'm waiting to hear on this deal...I wanna' hear a totally muddy, unEQ'd mix from you...soon, lol. The drums are from "loopology.com," which is some kind of a partner venture with Syntrillium (Makers of CoolEditPro). They have tempo information stored in special ".cel" files that my tracking software reads and understands somehow...God knows I don't. Thanks for the spin!!

quincy - LOL...that mic is like the Volkswagen of Microphones, in my book...for the following reason. When I learned how to drive a manual transmission vehicle, it was in a 1967 VW Beetle...If you can learn to drive that car, then you can drive anything, lol. I think this mic is the same way...The reason it gets knocked so much is because of the highly exaggerated top end, I think. It is a sibilant mic, and I'm a pretty sibilant singer, so it's just not a good pairing...I've actually promised the mic to somebody, but I haven't let go of it yet, b/c somebody else is borrowing my new ones. Anyway, I just turn the damned thing totally sideways and sing across the face of it...it helps...some, lol.

I'm tracking straight to the computer through an M-Audio DMP3 preamp. I track in CoolEdit. I usually mix there too, but I'm starting to think that all I do is screw stuff up. Regardless, I love the software...it gives me a wide variety of ways to ruin my mixes. :D :D

Tell you what. The next new mix I post, I'll put up a "faders only" version first. It'll take me a while; this challenge will be long over by then.

I'm still working on a remix of my last tune.

Chris...listening right now and I dig! Your recording without any work are better than mine with some work.

Of course I have no idea what I'm doing when I "work" on a tune. I'm sorry if you already answered this, but what do you use for your recorder?

You are truly one of the masters on this mp3 section. Thanks for your participation here!

I did read your response - but, to be honest, I wasn't sure what you were telling me. As I recall, you pointed me to a post later in the thread and I somehow missed your point. I really need things explained to me like I'm a 7-year old. LOL. It's clear to me now. I'll check out the tune.

BPOCO

Great job, Chris. Definitley a different sound from what I've heard of yours before. This seems almost power punk. Great vocals. Sounds pretty finished for something without effects and stuff. I don't understand how you guys throw these things together?! How do you guys have time to write songs, record em, sing em, post em, listen to everbody elses, post on this board....it's amazing to me. I'm gonna go take a nap.

Hey dude this is great! I like this side of ya. You've definitely good a gift for pop potential stuff. Whether it's your "hillbilly" type stuff (as you call it), or something like this, you've got a knack for developing catchy themes into the full deal.

The tracking here sounds solid...another good example. If and when you post a full mix, I might bust your balls a bit about the BG mixing. But we'll see. :)

Good show!

...if you can figure out some way for this tune to make money, lol...then as far as I'm concerned, you wrote half of it, lmao...

This would pitch good to Television Chris....as a Theme Song to one of those "Friends" type of shows....no shit man...I am totally sincere....

Listening on my monitors now man.....

The Bass is a bit weak.....
The violin needs to be tuned.....
Is that DJ scratchin' I hear at 3:22?
where in god's name did you get that loop of a herd of Elephants stampeding through a China Shop?...pretty cool.....

What? :D

OK...OK....Cool Harmony Vox man....
You should re-mix it with all the bells and whistles that you have at your disposal......it is a super cool tune man,
Joe

Hey, let's try something new...I'll post in my thread again, lol.

Okay..."new" version is up. I did basically 3 things.

1. Turned the tremolo thing up...I don't know why, it just bugged me with the huge change in volume when it starts in earnest.

2. Added an intro lead - I did this for one reason only...so "mbuster" could get an idea of how it sounds in my head.

3. I augmented the drum loop a bit, lol. I know I went overboard on the fills and crashes and crap...and part of it honestly sounds "disco" to me now. Man, I hate drums.

STILL DOESN'T HAVE A BASS (**I don't dare ask Mike, what with the new baby and all, lol**) :D

"TIME TO LEAVE"
www.nowhereradio.com/honestmango/singles

--Anyway, this is the last "dry" mix I'm doing... so if anything's buggin' ya', please let me know.

Sluice - Dude, don't keep me in the dark, lol. You're talking about the background vocals, right? I'm gonna' drown them in reverb and stuff, lol...so maybe that'll fix it?

Robert8 - Thanks for checking it out...and trust me, I'm not doing anybody any favors around here, lol...my listen to post ratio is about 1 to 1 these days, lol.

macle - No magic to the time issue on this one...it only has 3 instrument tracks. (Canned drums, a guitar, and another guitar)...thanks for listening man...have a good nap.

joro - Yeah, those are my 2 boys screaming...they were "singing" in the bathtub...and they have lungs like me, lol. Those kids are actually on a lot of my tracks, lol...sometimes I fix 'em, most of the time I leave 'em in...maybe they'll listen to one of my tunes when I'm dead and laugh, lol. Thanks for the check. (lead tone sucks, lol)
