i definitely agree that morgan is sometimes overlooked. he is phenomenal, especially in the early albums. No one ever mentions gene hoglin. that guy is amazing, listen to any song on Deaths "Symbolic" album, its great. I hate limp bizkit, but John Otto is a good drummer and its too bad his talent is overshadowed by a douche-bag like fred durst. Dave lombardo is excellent but i never hear anyone mention him. And lastly, this may get a good laugh but "Smitty" from the tonight show along with Max Weinberg from Conans Show are both great i love to watch them play. Also death metal drummers get no respect but the deserve every bit of it those blast beats and crazy doubles arent easy.

I'll second Dave Lombardo, I've always preferred his style over Paul Bostaff.
I also enjoyed his playing on the Grip Inc. stuff, it's too bad that the actual songs weren't half as good.

Hmm John Otto good....I guess it depends on what your definition of good is. Yeah he can carry a beat, but by all means he is someone that should not be recgonized as "Under-Rated". He is what he is and that is nothing special.

Yea, hes deffinitly not under-rated. He's pretty overrated because most fans of Limp Bizkit have little to know musical knowledage (in my opinion) due to the way younger age group that listens to them. If a kid sees a drummer playing a fast roll around the kit as a fill, they automatically think they are a god.

Oh yea, underrated drummers...
Dave Ghrol. That guy is completely nuts, and he is trashed constantly for playing "shitty punk" and being a guitar player / singer in the Foo Fighters. This guy is what I would consider a musical genius. He can play every basic rock instrument just as good as the top player of that instrument can. And he's a very versatile drummer. Just look at a list of bands / generes he has played in.
Vinnie Paul. Nothing much to say, I see him as under rated though...

DEFFINITLY not to community readers, but Neil Peart. It may sound crazy, but it makes me sick how many times I see people listen to rush and say something about the drummer being lame, or him playing oh so basic stuff. You and I know, Neil Peart is a god. Simple as that. Those musically retarted can say all they want without seeing this guy play something different than the basic rhythm he keeps in the albums, which he rarely does. But, they all come around when they come over and see my Rush in Rio DVD. AH what a great DVD!

Phil Rudd-AC/DC (master of simplicity)
Tim "Herb" Alexander-Primus (he's a pretty creative drummer and has great feel even in odd times)

I can agree on Phil Rudd, but how can you say Herb is under rated?!
I see it that he's neither. If someone actually gets around to listening to any Primus album, they will hear how insane this guy really is. He never really plays out, but the technicality is deffinitly there.

I think I can speak for all of us and say pretty much all underrated drummers to another party other than this community are the ones who don't play out constantly like Dave Weckl or Mike Portnoy, etc.. Portnoy and Weckl are gods, don't get me wrong, but the shallow sence in music to other people makes determining the best drummer by which one plays the fastest and most on a record.

John Otto

I'd would have to say he is a under-rated drummer. He gets a bad rep. because of the shitty band he was in. He was not even a rock drummer, he was a jazz drummer gone rock because Sam Rivers (Bassist) asked his cousin, John, for a favour. I am in no means saying John is the best drummer but definatly under-rated as a musician. I also think John Dolomayan from System of a Down is better than people think. He also was raised a Jazz player.

John Otto is not great he is just ehhh.....Just beceause someone plays jazz doesn't make them better........

John Paul Gaster - Clutch

Brant Bjork - Kyuss, Fu Manchu

never heard of them untill I heard their bands, and they rock.

the drummer from the used is awesome... ive seen them live twice, and he has been spot on both times.

The drummer from ZZ Top. The drumming on everything before 1983. He Groovin'.

Wow your def of awesome is vastly diffrent then mine. He is on spot with his album work, but his album work is on spot with crap.

1. Bill Bruford of Yes
2. Mike Protnoy of Dream Theater (only cause DT isnt that "well-known")
3. Dana Carey of Tool
4. Malcolm Mortimore, Martin Smith, John Weathers of Gentle Giant
5. Pat Mastelotto of King Crimson
6. Phil Collins of Genesis
7. Carl Palmer of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer
8. Almost any Blues/Jazz drummer around

O.k why does everyone think that you are atomaticaly better if you play Blues/Jazz

Sorry if you implied that I made them "automatically better". If you listen/watch blues and jazz drummers they don't suck. Most genres stem from blues and jazz. Both genres of which are very difficult to play. I think people need to become open minded to other genres. John Bonham used a lot of Jazz techniques. Dont take this the wrong way. I just feel that Blues/jazz drummers have emense talent.

Elvin Jones is talked about alot but not enough. He is atomically better. I have seen him play half a dozen times. He was unreal man.

Stewart Copeland is still underated as far as rock drummers go he grooves the shit out of that police stuff.

That chick from trip shakespeare that plays the kit standing up with just her hands was bad.

The drummer/percussion players for edie brickell were serious badasses from north texas state.

Marvin Smitty Smith

According to this none of them suck.....wow I need to start playing the blues more often

Serious, it just seems that there is a crazy stigma surronding blues/jazz musicians. Its eaither your good or not, and has nothing to do with what genre your playing.

MARK BRZEZICKI - most famous for his work with Big Country - one of the most underrated BANDS of all time. Brilliant musicianship all the way around. Mark is very highly regarded by those who know his work. He has played sessions with the likes of Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, Joan Armatrading, Peter Gabriel, and Sting, yet he still does not receive the high profile that someone of his talent deserves. In my opinion, he is one of the very best drummers ever. Super creative, original , and very "musical". Writes great parts and always takes the song to the next level. Well worth checking out his work - especially the early Big Country albums. Awesome stuff really.

And I agree with A Guy Named Jon for saying "It seems like Drumming is underrated to the world." Sad but true.
