just like to say a big hi to everyone!

i have a question about cubase 4.
i have a new Sony VIAO VGN-FW21M which is running Windows Vista, and have just bought Cubase 4 on ebay.
before this i had Magix Music Maker 2004, which i also bought (£1.99 can u believe!) this was very easy to use unlike Cubase 4, which is giving me so much brain ache.
i'm trying to follow the Getting Started manual.
if u know this book then i'm on page 29 and have just loaded up the bass guitar "Recording" in folder Tutorial 1.
when i load this up i'm then suppose to click on the Monitor button to hear the bass guitar but instead all i get is a very hight pitched noise coming out of my laptops speakers and into my poor ears. any help on this would be very welcome.
thanks......looking forward to hearing from you all.

Hi. Welcome to the site. Do you have a microphone plugged in?? If so, use headphones instead of speakers.

peace.

unable to hear recording

hi!
and thanks for the advice
although by now to hear the bass guitar i think i really need to pluck in a real live guitar......i thought the file "Recording" was the actuall sound of a guitar i would hear.
but with the earphone plugged in i don't get that loud high pitched scream anymore.....and as i've just bought a midi keyboard i will try recording from that.
again many thanks.

Okay, re-read your first post. You're on a laptop... running cubase... you hit the monitor button... got it. What is happening when you hit the monitor button is you start to monitor the live signal of whatever input is selected. Most likely, in your case, it's the laptop microphone. And because you don't have headphones plugged in, the mic is feeding back from the laptop speakers. That's the high pitch scream you're hearing.

No need to turn on the monitor button if you're dragging (or importing) an audio file. Only when you're recording a track and even then only when you want to monitor what the processed audio will sound like. My experience, I use the monitor button only to be sure I've got a signal going into Cubase and then I turn it off.

As for not hearing the pre-recorded track from the tutorial, I'm not sure what is going on. Make sure the file is a .Wav file and that you drag it to an Audio channel (not midi or FX).
