hi i'm new to all this (i'm really glad this place is around too, looks like this place is a great resource for lots of stuff), so sorry in advance for this simple question, but i just got a fostex MR-8. and i'm all ready to go to record my tracks with my synth but i don't know what to use to connect it. is this where i use a midi cable or some othe cable to use with the 'unbal/guitar' jack? i got zealous and got a package with the headphones and mic and cord but soon realized i'm a little, uh, stuck.
any help would be great, thanks :)

you need a 1/4" cable (guitar cable).

If you have left and right outputs on your synth, you would connect them up to channel 1 and 2 of the unbal/hi Z inputs on the mr8

there's only one output line on my synth, so i would just connect the cable from there to the unbal/guitar jack on the MR-8 right?

thanks for answering. i didn't notice there was a newbie section here that this post prolly belongs rather than here.

I would venture to guess that would be the way(1/4 inch output to MR8 1/4 input). Try it and see what happens. I had to be told this too, but don't be scared of screwing it up, my MR8 has stood up to my abuse, and I've given it a substantial amount!

Do you have an XLR connection on your synth? It is a circular configuration with three pins.

no, i wish i did tho! :/
um, do you use a synth with your MR-8 cellar? if so, do you know how to record in stereo? do i need a special cable with two prongs on the end to plug into the MR-8 or would i record onto two tracks?

ps. thanks for the help btw. i just purchased a monster cable standard 100 instrument cable from zzounds.com. i hope that will work.

hey trim

does your synth have a headphone output?

You can get a plug that converts the headphone output into 2 x 1/4" guitar cables that will go straight into the 2 channels on your MR8 (I assume the MR8 has got 2 recording channels? I must admit I havent even checked... :)

I have tried looking for this plug (adaptor) at radioshack and other places but have not been able to find it!

do you know how to solder?...... ;)

adaptor

i had to make one using the 1/8 in converters to 1/4 inch (red and white ends to one black end, then i put the 1/4 inch adaptors on the splitter to go into the mr 8

I also use the 1/8 inch ("RCA" cables, as they are known to me for unknown reasons!) to 1/4, to run from the tape out on my mackie to the mr8. I later discover a "mixer out" jack, cleverly concealed right in front of my face and have used it since.

i haven't soldered since 8th grade :/
i have heard that making your own cables is a skill that pays off (i believe it was somewhere on this site actually)
but i don't think i'll be doing that just yet ;)

my synth has one output that is a 1/4 inch jack so i don't need to do any converting there. i plugged in to both (channels?) input a and b on the MR-8 and it sounds fine.

i also think i need to 'read the effin manual' a little more also.

:o
