Hello.

I have been looking around at various EQ's and compressors and have found out that a large percentage of the people say UAD plugs are the best.

When I look at the site it seems to be that you need an audio card.

Are there any bundles that they do like wave mercury or cla etc that are purely just software?

Well, you need an audio card to do home recording! An audio interface or internal soundcard ....

All UAD Plugins require a UAD DSP card to be installed in your computer. They will not work without the card.
you need to look for native plugs such as the waves ones you mention if you do not wish to purchase and install a UAD card

Being new to this I can't believe how pricy these cards are. Then again when you look at waves stuff and actual outboard hardware processors, nothing seem to come cheap here.

Is it a case of me selling my car to be able to purchase some of these? Would you guys ever buy second hand off ebay?

Buying second hand off of ebay is cool, but the plugins are still the same price even after you get the card. If you get a UAD-1 card, you can find those for only a couple hundred bucks. The down side is they don't have anywhere near the processor power that the UAD-2 cards have and some of the newer plugins won't run on the older cards.

If you are just starting out, you would really be better off just finding some cheap and free plugins to mess with. The UAD plugs do sound better, but they are all hardware emulation and include the quirks of the actual hardware. That can be a little confusing when you are still trying to get your bearings.

For the most part, the plugins that come with your DAW will perform the duties you need them to. Get good at using those before you shell out a bunch of money to get a version of the same thing with a little 'color' added in.
