Two songs recorded&mixed with Linux-based PC

The piano intro of "False Flag Show" was recorded last summer, and I spent many hours with this tune, experimenting different kind of approaches and here's what came up. Maybe this ain't the last mix, maybe it is (now that I listen with fresh ears, there's too much compression..dang). The lyrics were influenced heavily by Alex Jones' radio show and his films.. Musically something between power pop, hard rock, progressive rock ... or something else.




"Marshall" is dedicated to Marshall Applewhite, the cult leader of "Heaven's Gate" wackos who believed they can live again on the Hale-Bopp comet if they kill themselves. And they did. The song itself just came after experimenting with guitar sounds. Drums, bass and guitars took about 10 minutes to compose and record. I didn't even bother to play better solos, because the crappy ones had "the feel". After that I dug up the old lyrics I wrote near 10 years ago, sang the whole crap and add some keyboards. Retro rock, very 1960's/1970's.

Enjoyed it. I like the rhythmic changeup at at :49, also the contrasts in the arrangement. When the band comes in the kick and snare are a little too compression-flattened IMO. In the intro piano part I'd use a little automation on the high note (a C) of the 8th note rising/falling figure to tame it since the particular note is a little strident.

Just kidding. Nice guitar tones, if a little crispy. The drums seem a little thin but the overall mix is well balanced. Perhaps the snare could use a little less compression and a perhaps some EQ.
 
I love it. Im such a linux-whore.. i had considered trying to set something up.. but havent had the time to look into it.. :D

Pretty cool!

False flag show sounds like you used a gate on the electric guitar. Really stands out at the begining, notes don't fade out but get cut off. Could be that problem with the trunkating guitar fade algorithem in linux that we've all heard so much about.
vocals could use a bit more 5k but work well as is. matter of taste I guess.


I like Marshall. Reminds me of "The Birds" in places.
Needs some clean up on the end there. Vocals in this one suffer some from that dark nasal tone too. Nothing a little eq wont fix ;)

Drum sounds have a lot to improve, and I learned a lot making these songs.

I don't know if "gate effect" is caused by Behringer Gdi modeling pre amp or my Epiphone Les Paul, but got to work that out next time.

And to dark nasal tone: a piece of advice for all homerecording vocalists out there, sing in the daytime - I didn't! Recorded almost all the stuff at night... In some cases it's OK, if you want to sound more like Tom Waits.
