If I were trying to keep my mic budjet under $200 or so would I be better off buying two dynamic mics (one vocal - one multipurpose) or buy one lower end condenser?? Any models you would reco ??

For the most part I will be laying down single vocal, bass, guitar tracks. Then adding MIDI drums / keys. Unfortunately I do not have a studio...:( I will be running it into a SB64PCI card and mixing with either Cakewalk or Soundforge. Music style would be rock and if it matters my voice projects VERY loudly when I sing...

I will soon have my ART mic preamp! :):)

I dunno the specs of the ART preamp, but if it doesnt have phantom power dont buy a condenser without a 9 volt battery power with it (like the AKG C1000). I would probably just recomend a Sure SM-57 (or SM-58) but it will not get as good of sound as an AKG C1000. if you need more then one mic, get a SM-58 and a SM-57, if yah need one and care more about sound quality, get the C1000. Of course there are other condensers in the $200 range, but if your ART Preamp doesnt have phantom power your better off with the C1000 with the 9 volt battery power.

I'll be getting the MPstudio version - I'll check the specs. I was leaning to the C1000 but still not sure.

Thanks

I'm guessing that you running the dodgy SB speakers as monitors. If that's the case you should look at getting some headphones before anything else. Are you sure you need the ART MP (I don't think the SB64 even has balanced inputs), from the sounds of things you should get only what you apsolutly need, till you can go to the next level, and for that matter if you are only recording yourself would you really use/need two dynamics. Also doesn't the SB64 have a stereo input?

All the Best,
omni...:)

seriously... what do i think. if you are willing to spend $200 you shold utilise your setup to its full. get an sm57, and an NT3. in hindsight. you would have been better off getting 2 channels of preamp so you could run into your stereo line in on the soundcard.

TAKE THE ART BACK!!!!!

nothing against that MP....... but the Presonus Bluetube is a nice little tube preamp that runs about $149 american at http://www.8thstreet.com and it is a 2 channel MP. So if U can spare $50....... much cheaper than buying another MP to use both mics, plus U get the same quality or better(so I've heard)

check it out at http://www.presonus.com
Mine is in the mail, and I haven't heard one bad review on it. Also if your getting 2 mics....... why buy a MP that can only handle one........ 1 mic will be useless........

Thanks for the additional input...

I'm getting a mic preamp on reco from Emeric. The reco is consistent with everything I have read...to depend on the sound board preamp will give dodgy sound at best. His reco is to go balanced thru the mic preamp then go 1/4" to 1/8" adapter to the sound card. I'm a vocalist so my primary concern is kick ass signal for the vocals...

I haven't yet bought the ART MPstudio (saying it's on the way was an expression - I will be getting it soon) so I should check out the bluetube...

If I am recording one track at a time does it matter?? Is there a QUALITY difference over the ART?? The less I spend on a mic preamp the more I'll have for the MIC...

You really will be losing quality with the Sb64 PCI card. Not only are the D/A converters cutting your quality but the fact that they are not balanced into the 1/8" inputs (so you wouldnt even need a balanced preamp). I bet you could even get better sound out of a low price 4 track player (correct me if im wrong).

i believe oyu to be wrong. i used a ensoniq vivo card from way back during my 4 track years to mixdown onto computer with. it sounded fine if you treated it right. you gotta use the line in. because the mic preamp SUCKS in any consumer card. but line ins are pretty decent.

Actually it all depends on what card you have. I myself have alot of experience trying to record into cake walk with both a Creative Labs AWE64 and SbLive cards. Probably the biggest problem with recording with creative labs brands is that the cards are made for gaming purposes. the awe64 was better than the live by far however, the live created a very murky sounding recording. Of course this all depends on the cards D/A converters in the card which i know creative labs cards normally dont have better ones than other brands like ensoniq. Not to mention however you get a high level of static because of the fact of the card being inside of the computer instead of a outboard box. But yes i agree i could have been wrong about a 4 track sounding better (i really have no experience with 4 tracks).

Sorry kristian i dont mean to offend your intelligence if i did. just trying to add more info on the subject. Very sorry.
