Hey guys,
I'm in the market for a tube pre-amp with two channels. I do mostly folky/pop type recordings. I think the tube will help give me a bit more of a vintage/analogue feel that I'm looking for. I also like to do solo acoustic stuff while playing and singing at the same time (hence the need for a stereo pre).

So, these are two that I have my eye on...

Has anyone used either of these? If so, what have your experiences been? Is there a discernable difference that might make the UA worth $400 more? Any recommendations for a stereo tube pre other than these?

Rupert Neve 5012-H Portico Duo Mic Preamp - $1,649
Universal Audio 2-610 - $2,099

Thanks!

i'm pretty sure that the neve portico isn't a tube unit

Keerect!

For a tube pre amp, in your price range, you could also consider a Sebatron, an A-Designs MP-2A, a used Pendulum MDP-1, the GT SUPre, as well as the UA 2-610. A used Peavey VMP-2 is also a possibility and a bargain @$600-800 (out of production so used is all there is).

Pendulum Audio MDP-1a

I've never used the UA, but I have a Peavey VMP-2 (with replaced upgraded tubes), a Pendulum Audio MDP-1 (bought used), and a couple GT MP-1s, and I can tell you that the Pendulum, in particular, is worth the price of admission.

I'll second the Peavey VMP2. I've had one for a few years now. It's a very good sounding tube pre. I think the days of finding them in the 600 to 800 range are about done. More like $900 now. People have found out how nice these really were. BTW the were made in America by the old AMR division.

The pendulum in my opinion is a definate stand out of the preamps mentioned. There truly is a gr3eat design and some magic involved in the whole pendulum line.

The one thing that concerns me here though is that the original poster mentioned wanting "a bit more of a vintage/analogue feel ". Much of that is not going to come from the preamp itself, but from songwriting, the instrument played, the mic used etc.... The preamp alone is not going to offer that. Technique is really more important in that case. That being said, having a couple channels of Pendulum floating around is certainly a nice otpion;)
