just got myself an old turntable to mess around with. Now, it obviously needs an amp. I tried to use the preamps in my Mackie board and it's sounding alright, however, the volume isn't loud enough to hit even -20~-10. So, I was wondering if an amp is a must-have to achieve better quality?

I could turn the gain knobs all the way up, but I dont think Mackie was built to do that. So, what would you suggest?
Thanks

You need an RIAA phono pre-amp stage. They can be bought separately, or are included on some hi-fi amps (not on some newer ones, so you'd need to check). The Soundcraft Folio Notepad also includes an RIAA pre-amp for some reason.

That looks right. I've never used a standalone pre-amp stage, just a regular hi-fi amp. I'd check with the vendor that this device will do what you want and is the right one for you.

do those dj mixers have preamps in already? if so, what specs should i look for when buying a dj mixer? thanks

Yes, they are pre-amps. ;)

The specs, on this scale, are not that important.

like SPINSTERWUN said all you do is get a dj mixer. But than you can hook that to your mackie buy pluging the mixer output into the mackie.
