This virgin Newbie has no idea how to turn my analog tapes and DATs into WAVs.

I have a Y jack for the analog Line In and will get a new sound card for the Optical my Sony Vaio doesn't have. But the Cool Edit or Sound Forge manuals don't say how to capture the music, turn it into WAVs, and store them on my hard drive.
I also have Easy CD creator if that makes any dif.

Thanks for this basic information.

For analog, I assume your Y connector is dual RCA from the tape deck to a 1/8" mini stereo plug to go to the line input of your sound card. Make sure the volume of the line input of the sound card is turned up (not on zero), open cool edit, set to record, start the tape deck, adjust recording volumes and it will record as a wave file.

I don't know about DAT, but should be similar.

If I where you.......

I would use the same procedure as crazy doc, except I would record into an editing program, such as Sound Forge 6.0 by Sonic Foundry (and even CD Architect 5.0 if you are considering making CD's of your music).

However, if money is an issue you can pick up a freeware/shareware program.

I'll post you some links. ;)

Peace....
