Hey, it's been a while since I've posted anything on this BBS. I still haven't remixed the first song that I posted here, but I'm sure you guys dont remember that song, heh. I decided to throw up another song that I recorded with a friend. I brought my stuff over to the San Francisco Conservatory of music and mic'ed up a grand piano. I think we tried a Steinway, but we ended up using a Yamaha because it sounded better. This is just a solo piano piece by Bill Evans called Turn Out the Stars.

I recorded this with my Soundcraft Spirit SX going through my BR8. I used a pair of MC012's. I had to monitor everything with headphones, so I couldn't get a very accurate representation of the sound. I think it turned out fairly well, but you guys can be the judge of that. Tell me what you guys think about the sound of the piano. Also I swear I hear some parts peaking out sometimes, but you guys can be the judge of that too.

Excellent jazz piece Brian.Sounds as good as any of the Jazz CD's I own.Vince Guraldi,Bob James,Dave Brubek etc....I can definetly dig this.

I bet you play some killer Christmas tunes too eh?If so,you should post some of them around Christmas time.

Enjoyed it Brian.

{edit to add} I really should read the original post a little better.:o If you can get some Christmas music out of the guys at the conservatory do it!:D

Sounds good to me.....I hear what you're talking about with the peaking. It never actually distorts but it does sound like it could have been recorded just a little tiny bit lower. It has like a saturated sound. Maybe a little softer would let the piano 'breathe' some. But it does sound very nice right where it is.

Wow...... really classy. Really really enjoyed that. My wife's gonna love this. She studied piano for many years and always told me the Yamaha's sounded pritty good.... a bit more rounded than the Steinway ? just curious. Excellent playing by the way... I'll assume there are no wrong notes ;)

More please

Thanks for the feedback guys. I wish I could record more stuff with my friend, but we all left for college. First year is a little busy for both of us I guess. But we're both down in southern california for school, so I might have a chance to record some other stuff. I have all this new stuff too, new system with Delta 1010, so I think I might be able to get better results.

That peaking thing bugs me sometimes. I'll be listening to the song, and I think I hear it distort really quick, so I bring the track back to listen for it again and I don't really hear it. A little weird I guess.

I'll be sure to pass along the comments about the performance to my friend. Anyone can use a little more encouragement. He's actually going to be a piano major(not sure if theres any specific area) at the school he's at.

I'm very impressed with the playing. Very good. I agree with Bob on the peaking but it's a minor problem. you got a very warm sound out of the octavas.

Awesome dude,

Sounds like while the rest of us were out playing ball, you were in practicing the piano!!

Who's laughing now?

Listening to this, I have this urge to have a scotch on the rocks, and I don't even drink (scotch).

You my friend, are a piano player!!

Very nice performace of a great piece of music. Sounds very natural to me.

very nice!

i mean it sounds perfect cept for the clipping. The low register sounds very clean, nice tight tone down there. I was a little scared by your comment about choosing the yamaha over a steinway for solo piano recording but this sounds like the warmest yamaha i ever heard! they always sounded so edgy to me.

very nice playing, you gotta hang around here and do some collabs!

Could definitely hear a little restaurant ambience on this... glasses tinkling... rumble of the conversations... and the tip jar filling up...

Reminds me of that jazz pianist that played during Mr. Rogers (no, not a joke)... that guy was a serious jazz pianist...

Very nice piece; great talent...

HEY, im just d/l at the moment......

I cant wait to hear this! Im a huge jazz fan and a huge piano fan - wooohoo.

SO do you play as well RedHeffer??
I went into a store and started playing a steinway the other day - It was really nice but it wasnt worth 3/4 million or whatever they had on it. The sound didnt stand out that much.
and the guy almost called the cops just cos i was playing it....hahaha

Anyway the song...................................................

WOW.
Those low notes sound so real - like they are being plucked by a doublebass player.
Nice song!
I also know what you mean by the spikes sorta - It wants to distort but doesnt.
as for the micing up - where did you place them??
did u do any panning?
Im gonna record some piano and need some tips - youre the man - this sounds awesome

thanks
y
