Tuners for my Gibson Les Paul

I took my LP into the shop yesterday...it was having some bad issues related to intonation and such that I couldn't fix.

Well, that got me thinking. The tuners on my LP are stock and they SUCK big time. By searching through threads here, I came to conclude that Gotoh 510's are my best bet for some good tuners.

Then I got to thinking that I wanted some new pickups...wise choice or no? I want a good clean that sparkles and a nasty dirty tone that will bite you in the ass. That got me thinking about the Duncan JB for the bridge position...but what about the neck? Or is the JB all wrong for me?

That, in turn, got me thinking about replacing ALL the hardware on my LP for new, better hardware. Bridge, tuning machines, etc. Currently, my hardware is gold. Here is the LP I have. Maybe I should go with black chrome? Or no? Or should I not change the hardware out at all?
 
Another rousing vote for EMG's ...... absolutely the best sounding p'ups I've ever used and I've used a shitload of different p'ups.
 
Hmmm...I have to wonder if those would give a good clean sound. I've heard mixed reviews about them as far as clean goes.
 
I definitely wouldn't say they are great for a clean sounds but they are not bad. Another thing to try is to just put one EMG in, and then try another pickup for another flavor (or clean tone). But if you've never played with an EMG before, definitely check into it. I was blown away the first time I did.
 
Have you considered having a coil tapping installed? That should give you nice clean.

You can't mix EMG's with other pickups. The impedences don't match.


Or at least, it is a giant pain in the ass to do so.


I use 510s on everything I make these days, because they are quite simply the best made gear on the market. You certainly won't be unhappy if you do so.

As for pickups, it all depends on what you are after. Personally, I hate EMGs, though I think they are fine for a clean sound, I think they lack any character for distorted sounds. They have lots of articulation, but no soul.

I like Seymour Duncans a lot, as well as Lindy Fralins, and Joe Bardens. If you want something a little different from the classic humbucker, try the new Bartolinis. They have a unique character all there own. Very nice.

For hardware, if you REALLY want to go all out, you could get either a Gotoh 510 TOM or a Tone-Pros TOM (which is made by Gotoh, by the way), both of which are a step up from the Gibson stuff, but I don't really see the need myself. It is nice hardware, but I don't think you are likely to notice a huge difference in sound or playability.

My stock lp tuners are deadly accurate. I got a guy that setup guitars. Just pay him 80 bucks and he gets it right. When I get a new guitar it goes to him first.

I would also look at the Gibson 500T Bridge Pickup. It is hot and cuts. I have one in my SG. Cleans shouldn't be aproblem either. They make coil tap switches now that are on the volume or tone knob that you push or pull.

I've never tried active guitar pickups. I hate relying on batteries.
 
i had to replace my stock tuners back when my LP head cracked off (Light im sure you remember this from a few years back lol..) we replaced them with Grovers, the kind Jimmy Page had on his badboy
