Tubedude,
I agree with whoever's sentiment regarding professional studio time v. a lifelong pursuit of acquring ones personal professional studio, and no doubt going about it, financially, all the wrong way.
But when you say you're chasing 'that phat sound', - by which I know what you mean, of course! - do you mean by means of only audio stuff (which can probably be the phatest sonically only within a pro studio), or relying on synthy sort of sounds?
Synthesizer/good midi sounds are surely what makes current radio music sound so deep and phat, no matter what style of music. It doesn't have to cross that distance between instrumental vibration and recorder. I can imagine how the pursuit of recording gear to even try and equal the original instrumental performance must be a holy grail, an obsession, a bugbear!
That's how I assume it all stands anway, which is why now, in my early days (in experience and on a payroll), I am steering clear of even bothering with vocal recording, since you cant even try doing that synthetically (obviously), but to start meeting vocal output with recording equipment within my current financial reach sounds like a cycle of distress and expense.
If I fall into a million dollars, *thats* when I get my own professional studio!
(mind you, sounds like i might not get much change froma million from what ive read on this thread - ouch)
