I have to buy some new tubes for my Marshall JCM900 4100.

From the web site it looks like four 5881 Power Amp tubes and three ECC83 Pre Amp tubes.

The local music store has a few brands to choose from according to the guy on the phone. He also says I might want to bias them and get matched pair. Not sure what that means but I'll probably get that done.....

What brand of these tubes do you recommend? Any reason some are better (long life/tone etc).....

Hmmm no recommendations. I wonder... does that mean that everyone is using solid state amps???:rolleyes:;):D

Anyway got my amp back today. I have yet to try it out. I share the basement with the TV watchers/computer users who congregate there when it's super hot outside and the upstairs of the house is unbearable (no AC).

Should be cooled off by the weekend :D

The total repair included retube, replace bad fx loop jack, bias, test....

Three 12AX7WB SOVTEK Tubes (pre-amp) 3 $ 40.50
Two Electro Harmonix Matched Set of EL34EH (Pair) 2 $ 77.90
1/4 " PCM Break Jack (Broken Effects Loop Jack??) 1 $ 3.50
Labour (30 Minutes) 30 $ 32.70

---------

Subtotal $ 154.60
G.S.TAX $ 9.28
Total $ 163.88

I think I could have bought a new, albeit crappy, whole amp for that price.
That's like cars - they get you on the maintenance !!!

I'll try and post my opinions on the tubes later.....

man i gotta move to alberta. total would have been almost 180 here. actuallly i guess its not that big of a difference between here and there. but still.

Jeez, your bill is scaring me. I need a new output tranny and new tubes. I might as well buy a new amp and use the old one for parts.

Does your amp sound any better after having it retubed? I recently dropped a pair of JJ EL34's in a JCM800 and I think it sounds much better than before the change and well worth the cost.

I like the Sovtek or the Electro-Harmonix in my Peavey Butcher, and the Sovtek in my Fender evil-twin.
If you have 4 power-amp tubes you, ideally, want a "matched quad"--which means that the factory has measured the cathode "plate-current" on each of the 4 tubes to ensure that they're drawing a very similar (within 5%)
amount of current.
And, it's not really the tubes that get "biased", as much as it is the circuitry that the tubes complete. In other words, you should always have the bias adjustment after installing new power tubes. There are a few amps out there that don't require this bias adjustment, but it never hurts to use matched tubes.
Also, many amps have an "output balance adjustment". It's a trim used to balance the push/pull sections of the amp, and should be adjusted "after" the bias adjustment.
Your owner's manual should explain much of the details involved in these adjustments--i.e. you'll need a voltmeter set to the most sensitive DC scale, let the amp warm up first, exactly where the lead-probes should be touched, what VDC you should adjust to...
If you're not familiar with using a voltmeter, or you just don't feel comfortable poking around in places that could fry you or fry your amp, take it to the shop. That said, it's really not all that difficult to do--especially
with so much reliable reference material available.

Nice one Gerry, the room'll cool down then you'll warm it up with a hot valve amp!
Ah, but you songs are so cool it'll be balanced.
I had a retube done 20 years ago by a broadcast engineer, I certainly hope he was cluey enough to bias the thing. How would I know though?

Well, I finally got a chance to try out the amp this afternoon. Just enough time to run through the catalog.....:)

- these preamp tubes seem to break up sooner
- I needed to turn the preamp gain down a touch but I got a nice tone on the clean channel.
- there seems to be more bass and treble on the clean channel
- the high gain is a little smoother now, more compressed
- the high gain still sounds like crap out of the line out.
- through the speaker cabinet it's crunchy and has tons of that bottom end thump I like when I play rock rhythm.
- overall a bit louder than I remember it being before......
- I'm pretty happy with the overall results :D
