Tube Pre amp.. do i let it warm up? hiss problem as well

do i let the tube warm up before i record any vocals? in the beginning i was getting a LOT of hiss..now after maybe 10 min it has reduced..im using cool edit by the way... how do i remove the hiss if warming up is not the case?

Let it warm up for at least 30min.

If you still have hiss problems it's time to think about new/better tube(s).
 
i just bought the pre amp today, thanks for the advice, i had no idea i had to let it warm up for that long..

how come when i add a filter using cool edit to my vocals this hiss increases? thanks
 
What kind of filter?

Any thing that changes the EQ is going to add noise to the signal. Not neccesarily hiss, but ringing, phase anamolies, and other artifacts.

You can find the offending frequencies easily with a sweepable parametric EQ. Just crank the boost up, and sweep the frequency until you find the nasty spot. Once you find it, switch to a cut at that freq. and bring it back toward 0 until it sounds good.

can anyone give me some good gain and output levels and things i could do to make me vocals sound better... thanks.
 
You can't remove the 'hiss' of something with software unless you're prepared to take some of the upper elements of the tone you've recorded along with it.

I'm wondering what the hell pre-amp you got that 'hisses' on fire up? That sounds way wrong to me.

there isnt a massive amount of hiss.. its faint but still audible, im just wondering if this is normal... my pre is the dbx mini-pre...

the hiss isnt anything massive if you know what i mean.. its just there in the background...

Some hiss is normal. The cheaper the gear the more hiss it usually has. The Signal to Noise ratio on a spec sheet is a good way to determine how relatively hissy a component is.
 
Does it hiss with the mic plugged in like C7 asked?
Does the hiss increase or decrease with gain changes(turn the knobs)?
Are the mic cables laying near transformers or wall warts?
Is there any power cords laying near by?
What Kinda mic?
What audio card?
Is the hiss coming from your headphones or Monitors?
Is the hiss in your head?
Could be a bad tube, Ive had them hiss before on my Marshall just before I blew somthing.
Sounds like a good time to evelope a good debug routine.

Have fun...Buy a cable tester...

im not on this board 24/7, and i told you that i am fairly new to this stuff so bare with me, no need to get sarcastic. i appreciate everyone who replied, thank u i fixed the problem.
