Slowing becoming un-noob.
So I'm looking into what I'm going to invest in for my next amp and I want a cab and head. And since I've heard so much about tube amps, I'm looking into tube heads. I know they aren't cheap, but are there any great ones out there that are great quality? The cheaper the better. I've found two that are 500 bucks, an Epiphone and a Peavey. Anyone have any input on these:

Thanks for the help

People seldom put down gear they have paid for,, but I'd still take a look at reviews at harmony central etc....

Can't speak about the Epiphone, but I played on a Valveking and it was nothing special. I got my amp for $400 and it sounds about 10x better (plus is from the 70s). It really depends on what style you're going to be playing.

What kind of sounds are you after? Jazz, classic rock, high-gain metal?

It depends on what kind of tone you're after. If you want something metal then you probably don't want the epi or valveking although with pedals you can pretty much get any tone you want. I think a great starter tube amp would be a Valve Jr, but if you want something with big balls check out ebay for some used Mesa combos.

Get a 5150 off eBay for like 600 bones. I just got one and they fucking rule. =]

Take care,
Adam.

Here's my suggestion. Find yourself a really beat up early 70's Bassman head and have it modded. You get pristine AA-864 circuitry clean on normal channel and Tweed and Plexi crunch on the modded Bass side. Add a reverb pedal and a A/B box and you have all your bases covered. By the way these are 50 watt heads. David Allen does the mods or about $200. You could pick up a beater SF head for about $200-300
Here are some clips of my 67' Allen modded Bassman. They are on my son's soundclick page.

Ditto...if that's the tone you're looking for. I've had mine since new in '91. I added the bias mod and a set of JJ's was astonished at the sound improvement. The 'buzziness' is gone and the clean channel is much warmer and useable. It is also a road warrior, having survived countless gigs and practices. I play anything from SRV, to Pearl Jam, to Metallica, Incubus, Fuel, Blink, etc etc etc and it handles it all like a champ. The only problem I've had is a volume drop problem that turned out to be as simple as dirty effects loop jacks. They are prone to this.
