Whats your favorite tube distortion pedal? I'm looking for one to play heavy metal what do you suggest?

I heard that the Ibanez Tube Screamer is pretty good.

the tube screamer could easily be used for metal for example on funeral for a friends first album the main distortion sounds came using a tube screaming in front of a amp that already has a bit of gain on it already and then the sreamer drives the amp into even more gain like a valve amp

i picked up a Visual Sound Jekyll and Hyde pedal a few weeks ago and think it's the tits.

one side does the Tube Screamer thing very nicely (i like it better than my buddy's TS9) and it supposedly uses the same chip as the TS808.

the other side does the distortion thing quite well.....can go from a subtle drive to completely gnarly.

the two sides can be used in conjunction, but you have to set the pedal so the sides will work together--if you set them so they work great separately, chances are they won't blend together very well.

it's not a "tube" distortion pedal, but i like it a whole lot. i've used it in front of a little Vox Pathfinder and gotten some excellent heavy driven tones, and i've used it in front of a Fender Champ that was on the verge of clipping and used the TS side to push it over the edge. this thing can just about do it all.

cheers,

I think what he means is that the Tube Screamer alone into the clean channel of an amp doesn't yield enough gain for metal. I'd really love to try one in front of my Rat, because that thing loves to be pushed.

Distortion pedals are a matter of personal taste probably moreso than any other type of pedal. Also, whether there is a tube in it is rather arbitrary when deciding what to use. There are some great, great non-tube pedals (though I'm not even entirely sure that's what you were asking).

With that caveat, my favorites (depending on the music, and without any particular regard for whether any of them are good for metal) are, in no particular order:

Fulltone Fulldrive 2
RAT
Radial ToneBone (these have tubes)
Big Muff

I love my Mesa V-Twin

Built like a tank. Kinda sounds like one too. It's running 2 12ax7's in it and it sounds great. I play heavy rock and blues and punk music though (and some funk). No "metal" per say, but it's mildly versatile.

Same here. It's better than the ts808 imo; I love mine. The Hyde side has gain for day's.

I don't see why metal need a tube sound.

I don't see why metal needs a distortion pedal.

Get it from the amp! If you can't, get a better amp! :D :D :D :D

sorry.....I couldn't help it

DO NOT BUY THE MESA BOTTLE ROCKET!!! You will be increadibly pissed off with it. My buddy bought one a while back (good deal on ebay) and it totally sucks!!!! Please don't buy it.

I can't really think of a tube pedal that I would recommend. But a 10 dollar dod would be better than the bottle rocket.

Just my two cents.

What didn't you like about it, why do you think it sucks?
